UNIT # 4 EATING HABITS

PRESENTATION
Uso
Los adverbios de secuencia se usan para describir el orden en que suceden las cosas.
Por lo regular, estos adverbios  sirven para contar una historia, escribir una receta o dar
instrucciones.

Adverbios de secuencia
 After - Después.
 After that - Después de eso.
 Before - Antes.
 Finally - Finalmente.
 First - Primero.
 Firstly - Primeramente.
 Later - Luego/Más tarde.
 Next - En seguida/A continuación/Después.
 Second - Segundo.
 Secondly - En segundo lugar.
 Suddenly - Repentinamente/De repente.
 Then - Entonces/luego.
 Third - Tercero.

Reglas
La mayoría de los adverbios de secuencia casi siempre van al principio de una oración y
seguidos de una coma (,).
 First, open your book - Primero, abre tu libro.
 Firstly, I'd love to see the Colosseum - En primer lugar, me encantaría ver el
Coliseo.
 Next, add two tablespoons of sugar - A continuación, agrega 2 cucharadas de
azúcar.
 Finally, you can enjoy the view of the city - Finalmente, puedes disfrutar de la
vista de la ciudad.
First se usa para describir una acción que va antes que todas las demás. 
 First, let me check your passport  - Primero, déjeme revisar su pasaporte.
 I think you should first turn the TV off - Creo que primero deberías apagar la
televisión.
  First, spread peanut butter on two slices of bread - Primero, unte la mantequilla
de maní
en dos rebanadas de pan.
Next, then y after that describen una acción entre el inicio y el final.
 First, we will visit the museum. Next, we will visit the zoo. Finally, we will
visit  the cathedral - Primero, visitaremos el museo. En seguida, visitaremos el
zoológico. Finalmente, visitaremos la catedral.
 First, we need all the ingredients. Then, we mix the flour and water until it is
smooth before adding the whipped egg - Primero, necesitamos todos los
ingredientes. Luego, mezclamos la harina y el agua hasta que esté suave antes de
agregar el huevo batido.
 Snow White became very sleepy, and she lied down and fell asleep. After that,
the seven dwarfs returned home and found Snow White asleep - Blancanieves se
puso muy somnolienta, se acostó y se quedó dormida. Después de eso, los siete
enanos regresaron a casa y encontraron a Blancanieves dormida.
First y next también pueden ir al final de una oración.
 Open your book first - Abre tu libro primero.
 You have to boil the water first - Tienes que abrir el agua primero.
 I'll clean the house next - Limpiare la casa después.
 Hold the red button  next - Mantén pulsado el botón rojo después.
Later sugiere un intervalo de tiempo entre ambas acciones.
 She had a shower. Later, she went for a walk - Ella tomó una ducha. Luego, ella
salió a caminar.
Suddenly se usa cuando queremos mostrar que la segunda acción ocurre de forma
rápida e inesperada.
 A little girl was sleeping suddenly she heard a noise and got scared - Una niña
estaba durmiendo de repente escuchó un ruido y se asustó.
 We were studying and suddenly the cat jumped on the desk - Estábamos
estudiando y de repente el gato saltó sobre el escritorio.
Then se usa para describir una secuencia o sucesión de eventos. Then se puede usar sin
coma.
 First, call 911 and then start CPR - Primero, llame al 911 y luego comience la
RCP.
 First, came lightning, then thunder - Primero, vino un rayo, luego un trueno.
 Cinderella began to cry, and then the stepmother said... - Cenicienta comenzó a
llorar, y luego la madrastra dijo...
Finally se usa para la acción que ocurre al final. 
 After 10 years. I  finally got married - Después de 10 años. Finalmente me case.
 Finally, everyone lived happily ever after - Finalmente, todos vivieron felices
para siempre.
 After that, at night we had dinner and finally, went to the bed - Después de eso, 
por la noche cenamos y finalmente, nos fuimos a la cama. 
Before y after además de usarse como adverbios pueden usarse como preposiciones ó
conjunciones.
 He left the day after - Se fue al día siguiente.
 After two years, I finally sold my house - Después de dos años, finalmente
vendí mi casa.
  Everything was quiet after the explosion - Todo quedó en silencio después de la
explosión.
 After I left her a message, she called me immediately - Después de dejarle un
mensaje, me llamó de inmediato.
 After that, we have dinner - Después de eso, cenamos.
 I finished collegue two years before - Terminé la universidad dos años antes.
 Before breakfast, you should clean your room - Antes del desayuno, debes
limpiar tu habitación.
 I will call you before I go - Te llamaré antes de irme.
 Before that, he worked in the company - Antes de eso, él trabajó en la empresa.

Ejemplos
First, I get up. Then, I take a shower. Next, I have breakfast. Finally, I go to work -
Primero, me levanto. Entonces, tomo un baño. A continuación, desayuno. Finalmente,
me voy a trabajar.

First, I grabbed a spoon. Second, I ate the cereal. Third, I drank the milk. Finally, I

tossed the bowl in the dishwasher - Primero, agarré una cuchara. En segundo lugar, me
comí el cereal. En tercer lugar, bebí la leche. Finalmente, tiré el tazón al lavaplatos.

Firstly, boil some water. Then, pour the water into a cup. After that, put a tea bag in
the water. Finally, add some sugar - Primero, hierve un poco de agua. Luego, vierte el
agua en una taza. Después de eso, pon una bolsita de té en el agua. Finalmente, agregue
un poco de azúcar.

First, stay calm. Then, go to higher gounds. Next, stay away from

electronics. Finally,  after the flood check strutural damages - Primero, mantén la
calma. Luego, ve a terrenos más altos. Luego, manténgase alejado de electrónicos.
Finalmente, después de la inundación, verifique los daños estructurales.

First, put some of your favorite ice cream in a bowl. Then, pour two tablespoons of
chocolate syrup on the ice cream. Next, cover the ice cream and chocolate with whipped
cream. Finally, sprinkle chopped nuts on the whipped cream and top it off with a

Form
We use a comma after "first", "next", "then" and "finally" when they introduce the
sentence that describes the action.

 "first": for an action that happens before any others. We can also use "first" at
the end of the sentence.
o "I have a lot of work to do. First, I will make a cup of tea."
o "I will make a cup of tea first."

 "next" and "then" can both be used for an action that happens after another
action but we usually use:
o "next": for an action that happens immediately after another action, or as
soon as possible. We can also use "next" at the end of the sentence.
 "I went to Bolivia on holiday. "Next", I want to go to Brazil."
 "I’m eating breakfast now. I will clean the kitchen "next"."

o "then": for an action that happens after another action if it’s not
immediate. We can use "and then" without a comma.
 "Sarah is doing her degree. Then, she wants to be a lawyer."
Sarah will probably not be a lawyer immediately after she gets
her degree.
 "They went shopping in the morning and then they went to the
zoo."
We don’t know if they went to the zoo immediately after they
went shopping.

 "finally": for the action that happens at the end, after any others, or after a long
time. We can use "finally" before the verb without a comma.
o "I worked all evening. Finally, I went to bed at 11pm."
o "I worked all evening and I finally went to bed at 11pm."
o "After five years, I finally sold the house."
