Paleoliti i lartë
Prendi), në Burimas (M. Korkuti), në Barç (P. Lera) në Dersnik (P. Lera);

(Fig- 10).
(Fig. 11, 12).

MuzaferKORKUTI
It is an honour and an obligation but also a most arduous task to sum up half a
century of our archaeology and museology for this distinguished audience of
colleagues and historians, a task I could hope to achieve by addressing the main
issues. In particular, I should like to dwell on some of the most important stages in
the gradual growth of our archaeology and the crucial issues it has faced and solved.
Such a long activity has required its own cost of intensive research, energy, and
toil as well as, above all, the efforts of a generation of archaeologists. First and
foremost, I wish to recall the efforts of the founders of Albanian archaeology, Prof.
Hasan Ceka, Prof. Selim Islami, Prof. Skender Anamali and Prof. Frano Prendi,
whose contribution needs be examined objectively nowadays.
What were the foundations upon which Albanian archaeology was built 50 years
ago? This is a separate, albeit extremely important issue but I am afraid it is
somewhat beyond the scope of this paper. However, on the occasion of this jubilee, I
should like to mention the research of the French expedition led by Leon Rey1
carried out at Apolonia before World War Two, the work of the Italian
archaeological mission in Butrint led by Luigi Ugolini2 , and the early efforts of the Albanian
pioneer in archaeology, Shtjefen Gjeçovi3 . Gjeçovi was the first to collect and record
Illyrian-Arberor culture objects.
On the other hand, we should acknowledge that there was neither any
archaeological museum nor any other national institution engaged in archaeology nor, for
that matter, had research been launched into the Illyrian culture.
Concerned by this state of affairs, the founding father of Albanian archaeology,
Prof. Hasan Ceka noted as early as 1941: "Our motherland is very rich

discovery opens up new opportunities for understanding the culture of the Old
Stone Age.
The upper Palaeolithic material found in many sites (Xara II, Shen Marina,
Konispol, Kryegjate, Rreza e Dajtit, Gajtan II) tells about settlement continuity as
well as an evolutionary development. Generally, cultures of the Old Stone Age are
evidence of the earliest settlement in our territory and transformation of its
inhabitants into Homo sapiens. Research now should be developed to place the
discoveries made in Albania in their South-East European context
The Mesolithic age (10.000-7000 B.C.) started to be researched in the early 70s
and the first site to be investigated was in Vlusha (Skrapar)9 where microliths and
crudely-made earthenware articles were found together, the latter chronologically
dating to the Neolithic age. These finds still present some difficulties as far as
dating them precisely is concerned, though their cultural value is exceptional. This
site has been a major centre of research and interpretation, and could be of
continuing interest to Albanian prehistorians as it throws light on the transition from the
Mesolithic to Neolithic ages.

Podgoria, Dunavec I and II, Maliq I and II form the backbone of the Neo-Eneolithic
civilization of our country. The influence of these cultures spread all over Albania;
their successive stages contain evidence of the gradual rise of Neolithic civilization.
This continuous development between the seventh and fourth millennia B.C.. has
formed the bases of the relative chronology of the Neo-Eneolithic ages in
Albania1 3.
Dating based on C14 has led to a revision of the earlier traditional chronology. The
chronology of the Konispol caves, for example, goes back to the early beginnings
of the Neolithic age (i.e. VII millennium, or to be exact, 7060 ± 1 10 BP, 6800 ± 140
B.C.1 4 ). Similarly, of great interest is the new dating of Bronze age to 4450 ± 90
BP. This implies that the Eneolithic that precedes the Bronze age began in the
second half of IVth millennium B.C. Thus, the Bronze age dates to a thousand years
earlier than was previously believed using relative chronology; this accords well
with the absolute dating of similar cultures in neighbouring regions.
What took considerable time to resolve was the transition between the Mesolithic
and Neolithic ages. While studying the stratigraphy of early Neolithic settlements,
interpretation was mainly based on the archaeological artifacts of Podgorie
horizons. We believe that there was a westward movement of people coming from the
east who were good farmers in search of arable land, and settled this far west
introducing their first agricultural crops (wheat). As for the Vlusha settlement,
where the Mesolithic tradition of working flint co-existed with primitive ceramics,
the cultural layers of the early Neolithic age at the Konispol cave (Konispol Ilia),
contain evidence supporting the Neolithitization process of such cultures.
However, there is a need for further research and assistance from both palaeobotany
and archaeology.
The absence of data for the earliest inhabitants of the Eneolithic age in our
country prompted scholars to focus on the interpretation of archaeological data. As a
result, the idea was put forward of a constant development, and a long
socio-economic stability attained during the Neolithic age. This parallels the formation of
large cultural and cult communities and also indicates the first step towards
shaping a big, ethnic, lingual and palaeoindoeuropean community1 5. Albanian scientific
research of almost all Neolithic and Eneolithic cultures has always been compared
with prehistoric Balkan cultures and those further afield. Some Aegean, Adriatic
and central-Balkan cultural traces remain fundamental to these cultures .
Given the evidence of these these cultural links, we hope that Albanian
archaeology is making its modest contribution to understanding the process of Neolithization
in the Mediterranean.
Prof. E.Çabej , referring to methods of scientific research notes that "method goes
step by step with the object". The phrase is in full accord with the methods em-
ployed in the research and studies of both Neolithic and Eneolithic cultures of
Albania, starting with the investigations at Maliq and continuing with the cave
excavations at Konispol.
Research at Maliq started out of necessity to save the site from further damage as
a result of the widening and deepening of the Devoll riverbed. For this reason, large
areas were excavated in approximately 1 Om x 1 Om trenches. The excavations brought
to light a relatively large area of a "palafit" settlement and abundant and varied
finds. The research techniques practised first at Maliq were perfected in tens of
other settlements and applied, finally, at the Konispol cave. At Konispol between
1992-1994 interdisciplinary research was carried out jointly with our colleagues
from Texas University in Arlington.
Small squares of about (2m x 2m) were excavated, sieved and washed, and then
all human, animal and vegetable remains were collected for further research by
specialists of the relevant fields. The interdisciplinary excavations and research at
the Konispol cave mark what is said to be a new stage in Albanian prehistoric
archaeology.
Now let us take a bird's eye view of some of most important achievements of
Albanian archaeology, principally the Bronze and Iron ages as well as Antiquity
and the early Middle Ages.
Bronze and Iron Ages: The Bronze age includes the second and third millennia
B.C. It is one of the most important issues of Illyrian prehistory. This age includes
the early, middle and late Bronze ages and extended all over Albania (Vodhinë,
Bajkaj, Dukat, Vajzë, Patos, Pazhok, Piskove, Prodan, Bare, Mat, Shkrel, Çinamak
etc). Data from excavated settlements in Gajtan, Nezir, Maliq, Tren, Margelliç,
Badher etc. are not only scarce, but also geographically limited. By comparison
with the dirth of evidence for occupation sites, a number of burial tumuli have been
investigated which have proved to be rich in material culture.
The beginnings of the Bronze age in both its chronological and ethno-cultural
aspect are of key interest for our prehistory; in particular, Frano Prendi 's
interpretation of Maliq III still appears to be fairly precise about the beginnings of the
Bronze age1 6.
The concordance between Maliq Ilia and Konispol Va dated tby C14 leads to the
conclusion that the beginnings of the Bronze age should be advanced to the second
half of the fourth millennium BC1 7. However, the question of absolute dating of the
early Bronze age still remains an issue. Prendi believes that during the beginning of
the Bronze age 'there appeared a new ethnic element which did not bring about the
extinction of the native Eneolithic population, but on the contrary, it mixed with it
and coexisted'. Korkuti, Bodinaku and Andrea, who emphasised the role of new
ethnic cultural elements, also support the view that the core, authoctonous Eneolithic
component of Bronze age had its source in the indigenous culture.
Albanian archaeologists remain puzzled by the Iron age (XI - V centuries B.C.).
This represents a time when the Illyrians were one of the most numerous people in
the Balkans, enjoying a flourishing socio-cultural level of complexity in both pre-
and proto-historic stages.
S. Islami, H. Ceka, S. Anamali, F. Prendi and others have put forward the view
that Illyrians were not only bearers of the Iron Age culture, but also of the Bronze
age. After research into Vajza, Pazhok, Maliq, etc., Albanian archaeologists came
to the conclusion that the Illyrian ethos does not appear in the middle of the second
millennium B.C. but can be ascribed to an earlier point at the beginning of the
Bronze age. Prendi stated in 1 966 that 'It is not so hard to make out that during the
early Bronze Age, traits of the Illyrian ethos are dominant'. In contrast, I have
considered this issue as a long, complex ethno-cultural process that sprang up on
an autonomous basis during the Bronze and Iron ages. During the Iron age, the
Illyrian ethos was further consolidated in terms of its culture and language. This
was the time of so-called solid Illyrian communities, frequently referred to in the
writings of the ancient historians.
As far as ethno-cultural formation of Bronze age is concerned, Albanian
archaeologists subscribe to the thesis that a new culture appeared by the early Bronze Age
as a result of arrival of an Indo-European population from the East. Finds of poorly
made pottery such as those discovered at Maliq Ilia and the burial rite support this
thesis. However, scholars hold different views on the role that the newcomers played
in the formation of early Bronze culture in Albania.
Albanian archaeology has addressed and solved plenty of puzzling questions
concerning the Iron age (XI- V centuries B.C.) when the Illyrians were one of the most
numerous people in the Balkans at their highest social and cultural prosperity. I
would like to dwell on the question of the origin of Illyrians, and how Albanian
archaeologists have tackled that question. ' 8 While interpreting the results of their
research at the Mat tombs as early as 1955, S. Islami, H.Ceka, S.Anamali, F.
Prendi set forth their thesis that Illyrians were the bearers of the both Iron age and
Bronze age cultures. Their view was also based on the discoveries made in the
Vajza tombs.
Interpreting the finds of the Pazhok tombs and Maliq settlement led to the
conclusion that the Illyrian ethos did not appear in the middle of the second millennium B.
C, but had been in existence since the beginning of the Bronze age.
The two conferences devoted to Illyrian studies, held in 1972 and 1985
respectively, have examined the key issues of the genesis of the Illyrian civilization,
typology, chronology, urbanization, epigraphy, numismatics and political organization.
Neritan Ceka1 9 deserves credit for studying the inner causes that led to the birth
of Illyrian towns and documenting the proto-urban stage. In Ceka holds the opinion
discovering tens of tombs and Medieaval cities that led to the collection of rich and
various archaeological discoveries which threw light on key questions of the early
Middle ages.26 The Koman culture, discovered over a century ago, has been a
focus of historical archaeology interpretations. New findings related to this culture
in the Koman, Kruja, Shurdhah, Lezha and Prosek tombs, as well as excavations in
Pogradec, Kanina, Berat and Shkodra fortresses were further extended and
enriched by discoveries made at other tombs in Dukat, Prodan, Rehovë (Kolonjë),
Rapckë, Piskovë, (Permet), and Patos (Fier).
