Main Idea: CONTEMPORARY ART FORMS


Art – is a tool for communication. Whether it is painting or a performance, as long as it is a venue for
one to convey or express thoughts, emotions, or aspirations.
- is defined as the manifestation or use of the various creative disciplines. It is produced by
human creativity and skill to express oneself. It comes from many forms or disciplines such as
literature and media arts, and most familiar is the visual and performing arts.
CONTEMPORARY ARTS – is defined as all artworks that are produced in our present time. These artworks can
be expressed using the traditional art forms such as paintings, sculptures, pottery, etc. or can be produced
using new art techniques such as installation, assemblage etc.

Main Idea to be learned: CONTEMPORARY ART FORMS


Fine Arts – are the artworks that are readily associated with art. The term “fine arts” was first used to describe
the art form created primarily for their appearance rather than their practical use. Examples of fine arts
include: drawing, painting, sculpture, print, graphic art, calligraphy and architecture.
Decorative Arts – are also known as decorative craft, these are artworks that are both aesthetically pleasing
and functional. Example of decorative arts include: textile art, glassware, jewelry, furniture, earthenware,
metal craft, and interior design.
Contemporary Art Forms
There are new and unusual art forms that could not easily categorized between the fine arts and the
decorative arts: these belong to the branch of visual arts called contemporary art forms. Contemporary art
forms include recently conceived art styles and techniques that are experimental in nature. These partially
include; Assemblage, Installation, Collage, Performance Art, Digital Art, Land Art and
Conceptual Art. It should be emphasize that there is a difference between
contemporary art forms and contemporary art.

Example:

Assemblage - is an artistic form or medium usually created on a defined substrate that


consists of three-dimensional elements projecting out of or from the substrate. It is
similar to collage, a two-dimensional medium. It is part of the visual arts, and it
typically uses found objects, but is not limited to these materials.

Collage - include magazine and newspaper clippings, ribbons, paint, bits of colored or
handmade papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found
objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas.

Land Art - variously known as Earth art, environmental art, and Earthworks, the
materials used were often the materials of the Earth including for instance the soil and
rocks and vegetation and water found on-site.

Activity Instruction:
On a short bod paper, create a brief report or research on a contemporary art form. It may be an art form not
mentioned in this lesson. The report should include the art form’s characteristics, history, artists and a picture
of an example artwork of the form.

Main idea to be learned:


Performing Arts – comes in many kind, but all are enacted in front of live audience. Performing arts are often
categorized into three types: music, dance and theater.
1. Music – is a universal form of art. It is defined as the manipulation of sound and silence. It blends the
different elements such as pitch rhythm, dynamics, timbre, and texture it create sound. It is performed
by utilizing different instruments, vocal techniques and styles. It can be performed live or recorded can
be prepared in advance or improvised. Music comes in a variety of genres, with each genre having its
subcategory. Here are some of the most common music genres:
a. Art Music – is the umbrella term used to refer to music that stems from Western Classical music. It
is usually presented and preserved through written musical notations that were developed in
Europe.
b. Popular Music – generally refers to music that is accessible and commercially available to the
public. It is played or disseminated through different mass media outlets such as radios, televisions,
and the internet.
c. Traditional Music – are musical forms that are communally and culturally based. It is diverse with
one community or group often having a different form from one community or group often having
a different form from another. It is learned and preserved by passing it from one generation to
another through oral communication and actual performance.
2. Dance – is defined as regulated and deliberated order of body movements. These movements have
aesthetic value and are often performed accompanied by music. Dance comes in many forms and
styles, some of which are as follows: Ballet, belly dance, break dance, improvisational dance, hip-hop
dance, modern dance, contemporary dance and traditional dance.
3. Theater or play – is a branch of performing arts that often involves the integration and combination of
the visual and performing arts. It is defined as a fine art where actors and actresses perform
experiences, whether real or imagined, in front of a live audience. The performers make use of
gestures, music, song, dance and visual arts to help communicate the story of an audience. Common
example of theater arts are: Mime. Puppetry, tragedy, Opera, Musical theater, Traditional theater.

Activity Instructions:
Choose a dance style from the list above, and perform during synchronous learning. This can be done by
partner. The performance should around 2-3 minutes long and should be accompanied with the appropriate
music. While the others are performing, rationalize your choice (music and dance), and justify why the music
chosen is appropriate. Write your justification in a bond paper in at least 2 paragraphs with 5 sentences each.
