Title:

Problem Statement: A student playing around at home cut the top of a palm and a coleus

(Joseph coat of many colours) which both had a small piece of stem and

stuck it in the ground of her garden and after 2 weeks of water realized

that the palm withered away, while the coleus grew new leaves and

roots at the side.

Aim: to investigate the influence of environmental conditions on growth of new plants from

stem propagation

Hypothesis: Palms and coleus are different classification of plants and require different

conditions to promote growth

Apparatus and materials: 8 flowering containers, water, loam soil, ruler, silt

Method: 1) Use a sharp blade to cut four 30cm pieces of stem from both palm and coleus

plants.

2) Prepare the loam soil and set equal amounts in each flowering container. Place

the two pieces of palm in two separate containers and two pieces of coleus in

two other containers.

3) In the four remaining containers, set equal amounts of silt soil then place one

stem each from both plants into the containers.

4)) After all the stems are potted, place one palm stem in loam soil and one coleus

stem in loam in an area with a lot of sunlight. Place one palm stem in silt soil

and one coleus stem in silt soil in the same area with sunlight.

5) Place the remaining containers with the stems and soil in a very dark area.

6) Monitor the stems for the next 2 weeks, watering them daily with a cup of water

each and recording their height on each day.

Variables: Manipulated - exposure to sunlight, type of soil

Response - growth of plant

Controlled - amount of water given to plants daily

Results:

Type of stem Type of soil Volume of water Height (cm)

(ml)

Palm Loam 250

Coleus Loam 250

Palm Silt 250

Coleus Silt 250

Expected results: Stem from coleus plants exposed to sunlight and loam soil will grow

healthy new roots and leaves while the other coleus stem placed in the dark and spilt soil will

die. The coleus stem exposed to sunlight and silt soil will grow well and the one in the dark

will experience little to no growth. Palm stems placed in silt soil and sunlight will grow into a

new plant with leaves and roots while the palm stem in loam soil and sunlight along with

palm stems in loam soil and darkness will wither and die. Palm stems placed in silt soil and

darkness will grow a few dull leaves.
