Introduction
ATP IS AN ENERGY SOURCE
NECESSARY FOR
BIOLOGICAL WORK

BRAIN
ACTIVITY

Just like us, ecosystems and individual organisms MYOCARDIAL

use energy to function. For example, exercising ACTIVITY

requires energy. To generate the nerve impulses DIGESTION

that mobilize the musculoskeletal mechanism,
we use energy from the food we eat. Through
complex chemical processes, our body NERVE
TRANSMISSION
transforms food into ATP molecules, which
releases the energy required to workout. MUSCLE

02
Nutrition

Nutrition is the process where living things

obtain their nutrients from various sources.

When we talking about nutrition we can divide

them into 2 large groups: autotrophs and
heterotrophs .
AUTOTROPHS =THEY CAN PRODUCE THEIR OWN FOOD

HETEROTROPHS = OBTAIN NUTRIENTS FROM EXTERNAL

ATP
According to Valverde (2019) ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is an essential chemical
compound since it is used by cells to store and release energy.

ATP is an important energy source for all forms of biological processes, for example, it is
used in blood circulation, muscle contraction, the creation of new tissues, digestion, nerve
transmission, and so on.

In eukaryotic cells (like human ones), ATP is generated at the mitochondria as a result of
cellular respiration. Thanks to this mechanism, the cell is autonomous, that is, it has its own
energy center.

07
ATP synthase
ATP synthase is the enzyme that syntheses mitochondrial ATP, for which it requires a molecule of ADP + Pi
(inorganic phosphate). The enzyme consists of an intermembrane subunit where is the channel through
which protons pass. This transit causes the movement of the head outside the membrane and towards the
mitochondrial matrix. This movement causes ADP +Pi to bind, giving rise to an ATP molecule.

resonance effect between the
electrons in the oxygen bonds,
making them less stable
