ATP
According to Valverde (2019) ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is an essential chemical
compound since it is used by cells to store and release energy.
ATP is an important energy source for all forms of biological processes, for example, it is
used in blood circulation, muscle contraction, the creation of new tissues, digestion, nerve
transmission, and so on.
In eukaryotic cells (like human ones), ATP is generated at the mitochondria as a result of
cellular respiration. Thanks to this mechanism, the cell is autonomous, that is, it has its own
energy center.

ATP synthase
ATP synthase is the enzyme that syntheses mitochondrial ATP, for which it requires a molecule of ADP + Pi
(inorganic phosphate). The enzyme consists of an intermembrane subunit where is the channel through
which protons pass. This transit causes the movement of the head outside the membrane and towards the
mitochondrial matrix. This movement causes ADP +Pi to bind, giving rise to an ATP molecule.
