1. The selection “The Refusal” is an example of writing from the Post Modernist time period.
2. The selection is an example of the genre: Historical Fiction/ Realistic Fiction
3. The author’s purpose was to warn people of the dangers of absolute authority and dictators
4. Evidence for this is: The author was sarcastic towards the concept of authority. He was
showcasing the corrupting nature of power. The general was “not a tyrant”, however he
exercised absolute power without ever giving a reason for his answers or a proof for his
authority.
5. The narrator of the selection is: unknown
6. We do know the narrator is: the teenage son of the blacksmith
7. The narrator is discontent with the way their area is being governed.
8. What does the narrator think about the colonel?
He is “not a tyrant”, however wields power without any solid authority to do so. He feels that the
colonel’s answers are likely personally driven, rather than actual mandate from any central
government.
9. Evidence for this is: “He ruled without any contest, and without any document proving his
authority to do so. In fact, I doubt any such document ever existed.”

14. desolate: This street is desolate at night, it creeps me out.
15. explicitly: The teacher explicitly told us this would come on the exam.
16. barren: Where is all your work? Your notebook is practically barren!
17. character: Watch your thoughts for they become your words. Watch your words for they
become your actions. Watch your actions for they become your habits. Watch your habits for
they become your character. Watch your character for it becomes your destiny.
18. narrative: I prefer reading narrative writing to expository writing.
19. plot: The plot of this novel is very confusing.
20. point of view: I understand the situation from your point of view.
21. narrator: He is an unreliable narrator.
22. setting: The setting of the conflict is a food court at a mall, how unusual.
23. subplot: I actually prefer the subplot of this novel to the protagonist’s plotline.
24. theme: The theme of this quarter is communication.
