LAB 3: DESIGN OF PNEUMATIC CONTROL FOR A TRANSFER STATION

USING CASCADE METHOD

OBJECTIVES

1. To develop and assemble the suitable pneumatic based on the problem given.
2. To understand the application of pneumatic control technology in industry.

THEORY:

A sequence in any hydraulic and pneumatic circuits can be developed by the event-based
control, time-based control or even a combination of both controls. In the event-based
control, the completion of one operation causes the next operation to start. This can be
achieved by using sensors such as limit or proximity sensors. The time-based sequences have
events occurring at pre-set time intervals and are usually controlled by mechanical or
electronic settings.

Any sequence must be identified clearly. There are some rules that can help us in describing
the sequential movements of actuators in a simple and precise manner.

Figure 1 shows the possible assembly line which uses more than one cylinder.

APPARATUS:

PROCEDURES

Using Cascade Method, Develop and assemble the suitable basic pneumatic system to
operate the cylinder A and B as describes in the problem statement below (Figure 1) based on
the given template. The components that will be used are listed in the “APPARATUS”. Use
available software to develop the correct circuit. Simulate the circuit to verify the pneumatic
circuit is fulfils the below requirement. After that, assemble the circuit and make sure the
system operates correctly as required.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

Using a transfer station, parts are to be transferred from a vertical magazine onto a slide. The
pneumatic cylinder “A” is to extend when the START push button is actuated. This is
followed by cylinder “B”. Later, cylinder “A” is to retract only when the cylinder “B” fully
extended. After the fully retraction of cylinder “A”, cylinder “B” will then retract. The whole
sequence should repeat itself and stop only when the START push button is released. The
speeds of cylinders A and B are to be adjustable in both directions of motion.

INSTRUCTION:

Please prepare the lab report in your own word. You must send the report with the following
information in two weeks:

1. The lab cover complete with your name, index number and title of the experiment.
2. The report, complete with objective, learning outcome, theory, apparatus, procedures, any
tabulated or graphical experimental data/result, discussion, answer and conclusion.
3. Develop suitable fully pneumatic system based on A+ B+ A- B- sequence.
4. Discuss in details the operation of pneumatic circuit by explaining the function of each
components, start from momentarily press the START button until the cylinder complete
the cycle (A+ B+ A- B-).
5. Draw a function diagram for both cylinder of sequence A+ B+ A- B-.

6. State any significant conclusion.

Discussion:

Discuss in details the operation of pneumatic circuit by explaining the function of each
components, start from momentarily press the START button until the cylinder complete the
cycle (A+ B+ A- B-).

1. Describe what would happen if the rod of cylinder “A” did not touch the limit switch of 1.2.

2. Describe what would happen if the rod of cylinder “B” did not touch the limit switch of 2.2.

3. Develop suitable fully pneumatic system based on A+ B+ A- B- sequence.
