Revision Test 2 (Part 2)

1. The amount of flux present in a round magnetic bar was measured at 0.02 Wb. If the material
has a diameter of 15 cm, calculate the magnetic flux density, B. [1.132 T]

2. A 200-turn circular coil with radius of 5 cm is placed perpendicular to the magnetic field of 5 T
and a 10 Ω resistor is placed across the coil terminals. Determine the:

i) magnetic flux, 𝜙 passing through the coil. [0.03927 Wb]

ii) emf, eind and current, Iind induced in the coil when it is rotated through an angle of 90o in
0.5 seconds. [15.71 V, 1.571 A]

3. A ferromagnetic core with a relative permeability of 5000 has a mean path length of 40 cm
and a cross sectional area of 100 cm2. A 100 turn coil of wire carrying current of 2 A is wrapped
around one leg of the core. Given the permeability of free space, µo=4πx10-7 H/m, determine
the:

i) magnetic field intensity, H. [500 At/m]

ii) magnetic flux density, B. [3.142 T]

iii) magnetic flux, 𝜙. [0.03142 Wb]

4. Derive the formula for magnetic flux, 𝜙 in the core with the magnetic permeability µ, mean
path length lc and cross sectional area A when a current i flowing through N turns of wire
𝜇𝑁𝑖𝐴
wound around the core as shown in Figure 1. [𝜙 = 𝑙 ]

5. A 150 cm long conductor carrying current i of 0.8 A is placed in a magnetic field B of 1.5 T as
shown in Figure 2. A force is induced on the conductor. Determine the direction and
magnitude of the induced force. [Left, 1.8 N]

6. Figure 3 shows a magnetic structure with 500 turns of wire carrying 0.1 A of current. Given
that the mean path length lc is 0.36 m and the relative permeability of the core is 1000,
determine the magnetic field intensity and magnetic flux density of the structure.
