Fired by e-mail: Elon Musk launches a wave of layoffs at Twitter

An e-mail sent Thursday to the social media company's 7,000 employees confirms
rumors of forced departures that have been circulating since the Tesla boss bought
the social media platform.

"By 9 am PST on Friday, November 4, everyone will receive an individual e-mail with
the subject line: Your Role at Twitter. (...) If your employment is not impacted, you will
receive a notification via your Twitter e-mail. If your employment is impacted, you will
receive a notification with next steps via your personal e-mail." The 7,000 or so
employees of the social media platform bought by Elon Musk received this e-mail on
Thursday, November 3, just a few hours before the company launched a vast layoff
process. The method illustrates the expeditious, even brutal style of the unstoppable
entrepreneur and boss of Tesla and SpaceX, who acquired the company a week
earlier.

"To help ensure the safety of each employee, as well as Twitter systems and customer
data, our offices will be temporarily closed and all badge access will be suspended. If
you are in an office or on your way to an office, please return home," said management,
which justified the use of the e-mail termination by pointing to the large number of
employees who work from home. Employees have also been told not to communicate
externally with the media or on social media.

The exact number of sackings was not yet known on Thursday night. For several
weeks, employees have seen many contradictory predictions in the press, all of them
impressive: 75% of all employees, then 25%. On Thursday, Bloomberg predicted that
half the workforce would be let go. The Wall Street Journal, for its part, mentioned a
figure of between 2,000 and 3,700.

What happens to your Twitter data now that Elon’s taken over

Elon Musk owns your DMs, but he may not be Twitter’s biggest privacy
risk.

Elon Musk’s Twitter buyout is a done deal. For just $44 billion, he owns what he once
referred to as a “de facto town square.” He also, it seems, owns all of Twitter users’
data.

If you care about digital privacy and you’re a Twitter user, this may not be great news.
Over the years, Twitter has been dogged by privacy and security issues, while also
dragging its feet on implementing possible solutions. The result is that conceivably
everything you’ve ever done or said on Twitter, public or private — including your direct
messages — now belongs to one of the richest people in the world, a man known for
being unpredictable, childish, and even vengeful. It’s also owned by a man
who reportedly plans to get rid of 75 percent of its staff, which could compromise
Twitter’s security even more. Oops!
