Course MD-100: Windows Client

Trainer Preparation Guide

Design of the Course

Windows Client is a single five-day course.

Required Materials to Teach This Course

To teach each of the courses in this track, you need the following materials:
• Microsoft PowerPoint files
• Student manual
• Student lab manual(s)
• Optional videos and additional reading links

Prerequisite Knowledge to Teach This Course

To successfully teach these courses, instructors must have a working knowledge of deploying and
managing desktops and devices in an enterprise environment. This should include familiarity with
Administrator of Microsoft 365 workloads, including cloud-based systems such as Azure AD and Intune, as
well as experience with group policy management using Active Directory and familiarity with System
Center Configuration Manager or MDT.
Instructors should also have a working knowledge of networking, server administration, and IT
fundamentals, such as DNS, Active Directory, and PowerShell.
Instructors should be capable of setting up their own environment and installing the necessary software
for demonstrating concepts to students. Instructors should be capable of determining how to effectively
demonstrate concepts.

Preparation Tasks
Instructors should complete the following tasks to prepare for each of the courses in the Modern Desktop
Administrator series:
• Review all topics in the student manual. You should be well-versed in every topic.
• Review all PowerPoint slides.
• Be able to speak to each of the talking points on the slides.
Trainer Prep: Modern Desktop Administrator series 2

• Some slides include videos. While you can optionally show videos to the class, it is
recommended that you instead watch the videos yourself and present the key points of each
video as your own knowledge of the respective topic. Some courses have video
demonstrations. It is recommended that you demonstrate these topics yourself. However, if
you cannot set up the necessary network infrastructure in class to perform a demonstration
yourself, then consider showing the video to the class.
• Instructors should review each topic and decide which topics should include a demonstration,
as well as pre-determine what steps should be demonstrated that would be most effective to
their audience.
• Review the Additional Reading links provided in the student manual. Again, present key points
from this material to the students as the value-add that you provide as an instructor.
• Not only should you review the labs, but you should be able to successfully complete them so
that you become familiar with any of the difficult points in the labs. This will prepare you for
helping students in case they get stuck.
• We highly recommend that you audit the following courses:

This lab environment has been configured so that Windows Update does not run. This is to prevent
updates from occurring during the middle of a lab.

Microsoft 365 Tenant

This lab includes a tenant for students when performing lab steps. Domain name and credentials are
provided by your ALH. You will need to provide this information to the students. When a lab step refers to
yourtenant.onmicrosoft.com, this is the indicator to use the provided tenant domain.

GitHub and Lab Steps

Lab steps are provided on GitHub in markdown format. This allows authorized lab hosters (ALH) to import
the steps and render the labs steps directly within the lab environment itself. Contact your ALH for
information on how they support this.

You should NOT direct students to GitHub to access lab steps and use within the course. This is only to
support ALHs and MCT feedback.

While the images include supporting files needed, they are also stored in the GitHub repo. If there are
minor updates or changes, updated files will be provided in the GitHub repo.

Since the experience can vary depending on your processes and how the ALH supports labs, instructions
for accessing labs within the course are not provided. Be sure to provide instructions for students on
accessing labs.

While the lab environment is intended as a tool for practicing, keep in mind the lab environment,
including all VMs and the tenant, are persistent throughout the course. Most labs are dependent on
previous labs being completed correctly. Students should avoid performing steps outside the lab steps to
avoid impacting lab steps later in the course.

The MD-100 GitHub is located at: https://github.com/MicrosoftLearning/MD-100T00-Windows10

Be prepared for UI changes

Given the dynamic nature of Microsoft cloud tools, user interface (UI) changes can be expected, which
may impact the steps within the labs. Students should understand unexpected UI changes are also
common in the real world and should expect this scenario as part of the role. Microsoft World-Wide
Learning team will update this training course as soon as any such changes are brought to our attention,
however you should be prepared for discrepancies.

Both courses, MD-100 and MD-101 use the same lab environment. However, they may use different VMs
so not all VMs available may be used in lab steps, however you are free to use any and all VMs available as
you see fit.

While both courses use the same VMs, they are still independent. MD-100 steps do not carry over to MD-
101.

Lab Updates

Lab steps are available in the MD-100 GitHub repository in the Instructions\Labs folder. This repo also
contains the lab change log (MD-100_Lab_ChangeLog.md) and know issues (error_log.md). Labs are
typically updated more frequently than Skillpipe (such as for UI changes). Lab updates are usually
uploaded on Friday afternoon (PST) to avoid unexpected changes during active classes, with the exception
of Severity 1 issues, which are updated immediately.

Lab Changes

Significant changes to labs, such as adding or removing new labs/exercises/tasks, changing the order of
labs, or significant changes to a task (such as changing the goal of the task) will also be documented in
GitHub, so it’s recommended that instructors check the change log prior to the start of a course.

Lab Sample File Updates

The virtual machines provided include the sample files needed at launch to perform the lab. A copy of the
sample files resides in the MD-100 Allfiles/Labfiles folder (the same files are used for both MD-100/101).
However, if an update is needed to these files, Microsoft will update these files on GitHub, and the change
log will detail the changes. Please check with your lab provider regarding the status and process of
updating the VMs.

Lab steps impacted by UI Changes

Trainer Prep: Modern Desktop Administrator series 6

Microsoft will make effort to keep lab steps current with regards to UI changes. However, it is likely that
instructors will come across them. If you notice steps impacted by a UI change, you can submit a new
issue in the Issues section of the GitHub repo. You may also fork the repo and submit a pull request with
suggested steps if you wish. Your efforts to notify us are greatly appreciated.

Experiencing Lab Issues

The labs for this course are tested end-to-end prior to release. When labs are provided to Authorized Lab
Hosts, implementation of these labs can vary during this process, and issues can potentially arise. Lab
Hosts may make minor modifications to ensure the lab can be completed in their hosted environment.

If you experience an issue, please review the MD-100 error log on GitHub. If Microsoft identifies a known
issue with a lab (beyond minor step corrections due to a UI change), it will be documented in the error log,
including any updates and notice when the issue is resolved.

If you do not see your issue in the GitHub error log, please report the issue to your hosted lab provider. If
your hosted lab provider responds that this is a known issue, and you do NOT see this issue documented
in the error log, please contact WWL support at https://trainingsupport.microsoft.com/en-
us/tcmct/forum/tcmct_moc or open an issue in GitHub.

Please do not assume issues are known issues. We realize that lab issues can be disruptive in a class and
contacting support during a live lab is not practical. If you experience an issue, please capture as much info
about the problem as you can and report the issue either to your lab provider or WWL support at your
earliest opportunity.

Setting up Demos

Instructors should prepare an environment for demonstrating concepts discussed in the lessons.
Instructors are free to use the lab environment provided for student practice labs, which have all the
necessary software installed.

If the instructor wishes to setup their own environment for demonstrating concepts, that environment
should include:

• A Windows Server 2016/2019 instance configured with Active Directory.

• A Windows 10 Enterprise client member in the AD domain.

• A Windows 10 Enterprise client in a workgroup.

• A Windows 11 Enterprise client in the AD domain.

Software installed should include (but not necessarily limited to):

• Microsoft Office 365

Trainer Prep: Modern Desktop Administrator series 7

• Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit

• Microsoft Power BI Desktop

• Windows Admin Center

Some opportunities for demonstration are indicated in the PPT deck. These are suggested demos – they
are not intended to be the only demonstrations you should perform. Instructors should review the
suggested demonstrations in the deck and decide if they wish to perform. Instructors are encouraged to
plan additional demonstrations as needed.

Course Timing
It is estimated that instructors should be able to complete the course in 5 days. This includes the content
provided in this course, as well as time for instructors to demonstrate concepts to students in their own
environment. Discussion with students is strongly encouraged. While discussions are sometime suggested
within the content, these should not be the only points during class where discussion takes place.
