Quarter 1- Module 1
USING AND MAINTAINING
HAND TOOLS

Department of Education ● Republic of the Philippines

What I Need to Know

This module is intended to help you familiarize the different tools and
equipment used in Computer System Servicing. This will also guide you on
how to use the different tools and equipment according to their functions.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify appropriate hand tools for proper operation and safety

(TLE_IACSS9-12UHT-IIIa-17),
2. classify hand tools and equipment according to their uses
(TLE_IACSS9-12UHT-IIIb-18),
3. use hand tools and equipment in Computer System Servicing
(TLE_IACSS9-12UHT-IIIc-19), and
4. maintain hand tools (TLE_IACSS9-12UHT-IIId-20).

Lesson
Using and Maintaining Hand
1 Tools (UHT)

What’s In
How are you familiar with computer maintenance job? Do you have any
experience in repairing a computer or at least a cellphone before? Have you
seen some of the tools used by a technician to maintain the longevity of the
computer’s use? This would be the lesson that we are going to have now.

What’s New

One of the Personal Computers in your Computer Laboratory is not

working properly, and you decide to open the computer case. What are the
necessary tools that you are going to use for you to open and fix it? Is there
any procedure that you have to follow?

4
What is It

I. Using and Maintaining Hand Tools (UHT)

Proper Tool Selection

A tool is a handheld device that aids in accomplishing a task. Tools range from a
traditional metal cutting part of a machine to an element of a computer program that
activates and controls a particular function.

Safe Use of Tools

Once selected, use the tool for the purpose for which it was designed. Not all
tools come with detailed instructions, but some do spell out the safety “Do’s and
Don’ts” for your safety. If there are set-up/use options, operator judgment must always
be based on the safest way to use the tool.

Environmental Safety and Health Program require the following:

1. All tools should be kept in good condition with regular maintenance.
2. The right tool should be used for the job.
3. Each tool should be examined before use, and damaged or defective tools should
NOT be used.
4. Tools should be operated according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
5. The right protective equipment for the tool and activity should be used.

FOUR CATEGORIES OF COMPUTER HARDWARE SERVICING TOOLS

1. Electro-Static Discharge (ESD) Tools
Static electricity is easily generated by friction on carpets, tile flooring, clothing,
hair, fabric, etc. The friction of moving air alone will charge suspended particles
and cause the build up of static electrical charges on people and objects in the
environment. Grounded antistatic work mats used with antistatic wrist straps
provide the most basic means for the controlled discharge of electrostatic
electricity.

5
Examples of ESD Tools:

Antistatic wrist strap is used to prevent ESD

damage to computer equipment.

Antistatic mat is used to stand on or place hardware

on to prevent static electricity from building up.

2. Hand Tool
➢ is a device for performing work on a material or a physical system
using hands only. The hand tools can be manually used by employing
force or can be electrically powered using an electrical current.
Examples of Hand Tools

Flat-head screwdriver is used to loosen or tighten

slotted screws.

Philips-head screwdriver is used to loosen or

tighten crosshead screws.

Torx screwdriver is used to loosen or tighten

screws that have a star-like depression on the
top, a feature that is mainly found on a laptop.

6
Hex driver, sometimes called a nut driver, is used
to tighten nuts in the same way that a screwdriver
tightens screws.

Needle-nose plier is used to hold small parts.

Wire cutter is used to strip and cut wires.

Tweezers are used to manipulate small parts.

Part retriever is used to retrieve parts from a

location that is too small for your hand to fit.

Flashlight is used to light up areas that you cannot

see well.

7
3. Cleaning Tools
Having the appropriate cleaning tools is essential when maintaining or
repairing computers. Using these tools ensures that computer
components are not damaged during cleaning.
Examples:

Lint-free cloth is used to clean different computer

components without scratching or leaving debris.

Compressed air is used to blow away dust and

debris from different computer parts without
touching the components.

Cable ties are used to bundle cables neatly inside

and outside of a computer.

Parts organizer is used to hold screw, jumpers,

fasteners and other small parts and prevents them
from mixing together.

4. Diagnostic Tools
Computers are easier to use and more dependable with each new
generation of hardware and operating system update, but that doesn't
mean they are problem-free. Here are the most popular tools for
diagnosing your computer problems:

Multimeter is used to test the integrity of circuits

and the quality of electricity in computer
components.

Loopback Adapter is used to test the functionality

of computer ports.
