SECTION 1
INTRODUCTION
The following paragraphs give an overview of the contents of this manual, give
suggestions about the appropriate audience for each section, and list additional
Wulfsberg documentation for the C-5000.
CONTENTS
AUDIENCE
It does not assume any prior experience with the C-5000 or any other Wulfsberg
product.
All users should read Section 1 to become familiar with the components and
capabilities of C-5000-based transceiver systems.
Operators should read Section 2 to become familiar with the names and
locations of the components of the C-5000 user interface, including the control
panel and the display.
All operators should read the opening paragraphs of Section 3, which describe
the features of the C-5000 display used in normal transmit/receive operations.
NOTE: To operate the system effectively, most operators need only learn how
to use the system main page (the Control Alpha Display page), and
how to tune frequencies manually.
Operators who want to use the C-5000’s scan mode capabilities should read
Section 5.
Installers and technicians responsible for configuring the C-5000 should become
familiar with Section 6. You should use it as a guide while you perform the
procedures it describes step by step.
Likewise, installers and technicians who program the preset channels and scan
groups of a system should use the procedures contained in Section 7.

C-5000 Installation Manual, Manual Number 150-1355-000
The Guard Receiver option allows the operator to continuously monitor one or two
channels in addition to the Main RT channels without requiring another complete
radio or pseudo-scanning process.
The C-5000 has expanded memory that can support up to 350 preset channels, plus
three channels for manual frequency selection (one per RT system). In addition, the
C-5000 is available with one or two optional Guard Receiver channels. Each
channel can be configured for independent transmit and receive frequencies, and
subaudible tones (CTCSS, DCS, Burst). In addition to a frequency and a channel
number, each channel can be assigned an Alphanumeric ID of up to eight characters
to make it easier for the operator to identify channels.
The C-5000 features two independent microphone inputs and audio outputs that
allow two operators using a single control head to transmit and receive on
separate RT systems simultaneously. This mode of operation is called dual mic
The C-5000 has two dual mic operating modes: Dual Mic Normal mode and
Dual Mic Optimized Mode. You can also disable the dual mic feature.
Dual Mic Normal mode does not change the standard user interface. You can
select it if your C-5000 transceiver system is configured for either two or three
RT systems.
The C-5000 Recorded Audio Playback feature automatically records the last 15
seconds of every message received on each RT system. A key on the C-5000
control panel allows the operator to select and play back the recorded segment.
For more information, refer to Playing Back the Recorded Audio, in Section 3.
SCAN FUNCTION
The C-5000 scan feature allows the operator to program preset channels into scan
groups of up to 10 channels. The C-5000 supports up to 99 scan groups, which
can be allocated among the configured RT systems as required. Each scan group
can be assigned Alphanumeric ID of up to eight characters to make it easier for
the operator to identify.
For more information, refer to Section 5, Operating the C-5000 CMC in scan
Mode.
ENCRYPTION
The C-5000 provides five Channel Memory Discretes, which are five discrete
lines that carry 0V or +5VDC outputs from the unit. Each line can be
programmed to output a high or low signal for each of the C-5000’s preset
memory channels. In addition, they can be programmed to produce different
outputs when transmitting or receiving.
The Channel Memory Discretes are designed to be used with external devices,
such a tone encoders/decoders, encryption devices, indicator lights, etc. They
allow installers to program the system to switch devices ON and OFF when the
operator transmits or receives.
SECTION 2

SECTION 3
OPERATING THE C-5000 CMC IN NORMAL MODE
This Section contains information and procedures you use to operate the
Wulfsberg C-5000 Communications Management Controller (CMC) in normal
receive/transmit mode. It provides an overview of the features and controls of
the Display pages, which allow you to access different views of your system and
operate it from the one that best suits your individual needs.
It then gives detailed instructions and procedures for operating the system from
each of the seven Display pages. This includes instructions for using the C-5000
dual mic operating modes.
It also includes procedures for several operations you perform in normal operating
mode, including manual frequency tuning, using the Mute feature to block
reception from all but the active channel, using the Phone Patch feature to connect
with local telephone lines, and using the Recorded Audio Playback feature.
NOTE: Before you can operate your system, at least one RT system must be
configured (refer to Section 6, Configuring the C-5000 CMC) and at
least one preset channel must be programmed (refer to Section 7,
Programming Presets).
NOTE: The dual mic operating mode you select determines the pages that are
included in the Display page sequence (refer to Enabling/Disabling
Dual Mic Operation, in Section 2):
• If you select Dual Mic Normal mode, the Dual Mic Alpha
Display page and the Dual Mic Frequency Display page (if
enabled) are both included in the sequence.
• If you select Dual Mic Optimized mode, only the Control
Alpha Display page and the Dual Mic Alpha Display page are
included in the sequence.
• If you disable the dual mic feature, neither dual mic Display
page is included in the sequence.
The Control Alpha Display page allows you to access all of the control
features used in normal operating mode. The other Display pages have
some of the same features arranged differently to accommodate operator
requirements or preferences.
The Control Frequency Display page is the same as the Control Alpha
Display page, but shows channels by frequency instead of an
Alphanumeric ID.
The System Display page shows the current status of all configured RT
systems simultaneously.
The Dual Mic Alpha Display page shows the active RT systems and
channels of a dual mic system, identified by Alphanumeric ID.
The Dual Mic Frequency Display page is the same as the Dual Mic
Alpha Display page, but shows the channels by frequency instead of by
Alphanumeric IDs.
The Display pages are the top level of the C-5000 software structure. When you
initially start the C-5000 and it completes its self-test and memory initialization
routines, the Display page that was active when the system was last powered
OFF appears. To access the Display pages from any page in the system, press
the * | CLR key to access the Control Alpha Display page.
To cycle through the Display page sequence, press the 3 | DISP page

Alpha Display page. Conversely, you can access the Control Alpha Display
page directly from any page in the system by pressing the * | CLR key one or
more times.
The Main RT System Availability Indicator field (see Figure 3-1) shows the
Main RT systems that have been configured (refer to Section 6, Configuring the
C-5000 CMC). It also shows which systems are enabled or disabled, and the
numbers of the systems that can be made active (refer to Active RT System
Indicator, below). It is found in the Control Alpha Display page and the
Control Frequency Display page (refer to Table 3-1).
The field is made up of the letter M followed by three character positions. The
left character position indicates the status of RT System #1, the middle position
indicates the status of RT System #2, and the right position indicates the status
of RT System #3.
• If a number appears in a character position, the indicated system is
configured, enabled, and can be made active.
If the number appears in reverse video, the channel to which the system is
tuned is currently receiving (refer to Receive Indicator, below).
• If a dot appears in a character position, the indicated system is disabled
(refer to Enabling and Disabling RT Systems, on page 3-12). The system
can be made active, but it cannot transmit or receive until it is enabled.
• If a character position is blank, the indicated system has not been configured.
Until the system is configured, it is unavailable and cannot be made active.
The Active RT System Indicator field shows the number (1, 2, or 3) of the RT
system that is currently active (that is, selected for transmitting as well as
receiving). It is found in the Control Alpha Display page and the Control
Frequency Display page (refer to Table 3-1).
TRANSMIT INDICATOR
The Transmit Indicator is a symbol that changes its appearance to indicate when
an operator is transmitting over the active RT system. It is found in all of the
Display pages. Table 3-2 illustrates the different forms the Transmit Indicator
can take and describes the function each one indicates.
RECEIVE INDICATOR
The Receive Indicator (also called the Squelch Annunciator) appears when the
active RT is currently receiving. The number of the receiving RT system appears
in reverse video in the Main RT System Availability Indicator field (and the
Active RT System Indicator field if the active RT is receiving) (see the example in
Figure 3-2). In addition, the Currently Selected Channel Alphanumeric ID field
shows the channel frequency (or asterisks if the frequency display was disabled
during preset programming).
Symbol Description
The Currently Selected Channel Number field (see Figure 3-1) shows the number
of the active preset channel (the preset channel that is currently selected for
transmitting and receiving). It is found in all of the Display pages.
Depending on the channel numbers assigned when the system was programmed,
the field can show a number from 1 – 350. Refer to Section 7 for information
about programming preset channels. Alternatively, if manual channel selection
was enabled during system configuration, the letter M appears in the field to
indicate that a manual channel is currently active.
The Direct Transmit Mode Indicator (see Figure 3-1) shows whether the active
preset channel is set for Direct (simplex) or Repeat (semi-duplex) operation. It is
found in every Display page except the System Display page (refer to Table 3-1).
• A channel set for Direct (simplex) operation transmits and receives over
the same frequency.
• A channel set for Repeat (semi-duplex) operation transmits and receives
over different frequencies.
When the letter D appears in the field, it indicates that the channel is set for
Direct operation; when the field is blank, it indicates that the channel is set for
Repeat operation.
The Currently Selected Channel Frequency field (see Figure 3-3) shows the
frequency of the active preset channel. It is found in the Control Alpha
Frequency page, the Active/Standby Frequency Display page, and the Dual
Mic Alpha Frequency page (refer to Table 3-1) in place of the Currently
Selected Channel Alphanumeric ID field.
If the frequency display is not enabled during preset channel programming (refer
to Programming Preset Channel Advanced Features, in Section 7) or during
system configuration for Guard Receiver frequencies (refer to Programming
Guard Channel Advanced Features, in Section 6), asterisks appear in place of
the digits.
RECEIVE/TRANSMIT INDICATOR
The Receive/Transmit Indicator (see Figure 3-4) shows whether the active channel
is currently receiving or transmitting when the frequency is displayed. It is found
in the Control Alpha Frequency page, the Active/Standby Frequency Display
page, and the Dual Mic Alpha Frequency page (refer to Table 3-1).
When the letter R appears in the field, it indicates that the channel is receiving;
when the channel is transmitting, the letter T appears in the field.
The Guard Receiver Availability Indicator field (see Figure 3-1) shows the
Guard Receivers that have been configured for the Main RT systems (refer to
Section 6, Configuring the C-5000 CMC). It also shows which Guard Receivers
are enabled or disabled, and the numbers of the Guard Receivers that can be
made active. It is found in the Control Alpha Display page and the Control
Frequency Display page (refer to Table 3-1).
The field is made up of the letter G followed by three character positions. The left
character position indicates the status of The Guard Receiver configured for RT
System #1, the middle position indicates the status of the System #2 Guard Receiver,
and the right position indicates the status of RT System #3 Guard Receiver.
• If a number appears in a character position, the indicated system’s Guard
Receiver is configured, enabled, and can be made active.
If the number appears in reverse video, the channel to which the Guard
Receiver is tuned is currently receiving (refer to Receive Indicator, on
page 3-4).
• If a dot appears in a character position, the indicated system’s Guard
Receiver is disabled (refer to Enabling and Disabling Guard Receivers,
on page 3-13). The Guard Receiver can be made active, but it cannot
transmit or receive until it is enabled.
• If a character position is blank, a Guard Receiver has not been configured
for the indicated system (or the system has not been configured). Until
the system and Guard Receiver are configured, it is unavailable and
cannot be made active.
TONE INDICATOR
The Tone Indicator (see Figure 3-1) shows the status of subaudible tones that
have been configured for the active channel. It is found in the Control Alpha
Display page and the Control Frequency Display page (refer to Table 3-1).
The Transmit Mode (Repeat/Direct) Indicator (see Figure 3-1) shows whether the
active preset channel is set for Direct (simplex) or Repeat (semi-duplex) operation
(refer to Direct Transmit Mode Indicator, on page 3-5).
DIR indicates that the channel is set for Direct operation; RPT indicates that it is
set for Repeat operation.
The Transmit Mode Indicator is found in the Control Alpha Display page and the
Control Frequency Display page only (refer to Table 3-1). The Direct Transmit
Mode Indicator (see Figure 3-1) shows the transmit mode on every Display page
except the System Display page.
The Active RT Power Level Indicator (see Figure 3-1) shows whether the active
RT is set for high or low power operation. It is found in the Control Alpha
Display page and the Control Frequency Display page (refer to Table 3-1).
Alphanumeric Description
HI indicates that the system is set for high power operation; LO indicates that it
is set for low power operation.
The Encryption Mode Indicator (see Figure 3-5) appears when the encryption
feature is currently selected. It is found in the Control Alpha Display page, the
Control Frequency Display page, the Dual Mic Alpha Display page, and the
Dual Mic Frequency Display page (refer to Table 3-1).

Figure 3-11. Dual Mic Alpha Display Page (Dual Mic Optimized Mode)
The primary mic active channel is the channel currently selected for transmitting
over the primary mic. The channel also receives when it is not transmitting. It
is identified by the number in the Primary Mic Currently Selected Channel
Number field and the label in the Primary Mic Currently Selected Channel
Alphanumeric ID field (see Figure 3-11).
The field can show a number from 1 – 350, or the letter M if manual channel
selection was enabled during system configuration. When you initially power
ON the C-5000, the active channel is the same one that was active when the unit
was last powered OFF.
The Dual Mic Alpha Display page includes two ways to select a different
channel and make it active:
• Cycling through the channel numbers
• Using the keypad to change the channel number
1. Turn the Outer Select control to position the cursor under the
number in the Primary Mic Currently Selected Channel Number field
(see Figure 3-11).
As you turn the control, the system cycles through the channels that have
been programmed for the currently active Main RT system (including
manual channel selection if it was enabled during system configuration).
Use the following guidelines:
• To change to a higher channel number, turn the control
clockwise. To change to a lower channel number, turn the
control counterclockwise.
• Depending on where you position the cursor, the program cycles
through the currently programmed preset channels by 1’s, 10’s,
or 100’s. For example, if you position the cursor under the 10’s
digit and turn the control clockwise, the system might cycle
through the presets 124, 135, 148, etc.
Using the Keypad to Change the Channel Number. You can directly access a
preset channel you want to select by entering the number from the keypad. Use
the following procedure:
1. Turn the Outer Select control to position the cursor under the

SECTION 5
OPERATING THE C-5000 CMC IN SCAN MODE
This section contains procedures you use to operate the Wulfsberg C-5000
Communications Management Controller in scan mode. It explains how to enter
scan mode, select a programmed scan group, temporarily delete scan channels
from a scan group, and exit scan mode.
NOTE: Before you can use the scan feature, at least one RT system must be
configured (refer to Section 6, Configuring the C-5000 CMC). In
addition, the preset channels you want to scan must be programmed,
and at least one scan group must be programmed (refer to Section 7,
Programming Presets).
The C-5000 scan feature allows you to program preset channels into scan groups
of up to 10 channels (refer to Programming Scan Groups, in Section 7). In
addition, the active channel is automatically included in each scan group. The
C-5000 supports up to 99 scan groups, and allows you to allocate them among
the configured RT systems as required.
When you enter scan mode, the system prompts you to select a scan group, then
scans the channels in the selected group until it receives a message. It then stops
and shows the scan group number, channel number, and Alphanumeric ID of the
channel it is receiving on the bottom line of the display. After the channel stops
receiving, the C-5000 waits two seconds, then automatically resumes scanning.
The C-5000 scan feature has a dual priority channel scanning capability. A
priority channel is one that is checked more often than non-priority channels. In
addition, the system continues to check a priority channel even when the
scanning has stopped on a non-priority channel. The active channel is always
the first-level priority. The second-level priority channel can be specified during
programming and changed during scan mode operation.
You can temporarily remove one or more scan channels from the currently
selected group during scan mode operation. You can restore a channel at
anytime while the group is selected. In addition, the original channels are
restored to the group when you select another scan group or exit scan mode.
You can only access scan mode from the Control Alpha Display page or the
Control Frequency Display page. Use the following procedure:
1. If necessary, press the * | CLR key one or more times to access the
Control Alpha Display page.
2. Select the Main RT system for which the scan group you want to
monitor is programmed (refer to Programming Scan Groups, in
Section 7).
3. Press the 8 | SCAN key. The Scan Group Selection page (pictured
at left) appears.
The C-5000 scan feature allows you to temporarily delete one or more channels
from a scan group during scan mode operation. You can add a deleted channel
back in as long as the scan group remains selected. The original channels are
restored when you switch to another scan group or exit scan mode. You can
also reassign the second-level priority channel.
1. With either the Control Alpha Display page or the Scan Channel
Receive page displayed, press the 8 | SCAN key. The Scan Group
Selection page (pictured at left) appears.
