Charter Fund Grant Application

Charter School Governance Team 2022-23

The HSES Governance Team would like to support teachers throughout the year with instructional
grants to assist in providing engaging learning activities for HSES students. If you would like to apply for a
mini-grant for an innovative practice for your classroom, please answer the following questions:

1) Descriptive Title of Program / Project: Vending Books, Food For The Brain

2) Purpose/Goal: To address the following K-5 standards: Reading Fluency, Comprehension, Literacy
Engagement, and PBIS

The state of Georgia does not have specific School Media Specialist Standards. However, I try to align
my lessons and activities, not only with grade specific standards, but also with standards from The
American Association of School Librarians. This project would support many domains such as:
Shared Foundation I: Inquire
Domain A: Think

3) Plan to Implement: Husky Nation is full of readers of all levels. Our students have a passion for learning
and growing. The love of reading can be fostered at any age with "good fit" books. As our students walk
through the doors, they are surrounded by great books! BUT, as a first-year Media Specialist, I have
learned quickly the disturbing number of students who have ZERO books in their homes. I hope you can
support me in bringing diverse books to our students in an exciting way! I am working hard to create
excitement around reading. To increase this excitement, I would love to bring Inchy's Bookworm
Vending Machine to HSES. ALL students will receive a token on their birthday to purchase a book.
Students can also be nominated based on PACK behavior expectations, by a teacher to earn a special
golden coin to purchase a book of their very own to keep FOREVER!
4) How and to what extent will the Program/Project benefit the following:
a. Students – The book vending machine will increase the students’ motivation to read as new titles
are introduced frequently. As a result, students' reading and comprehension skills will increase
which will positively impact their academic performance across all subject areas. Many books
will also have a label in the front of them to guide students and/or parents on ways they can
use/engage in the book at home.

b. Teachers – Teachers will be able to use the book vending machine as a tool to motivate and
promote literacy in both the classroom and outside the classroom.
c. School- The enthusiasm brought to HSES by a book vending machine will increase the
engagement and excitement around literacy.
5) Resources required for implementation:
a. Materials – Inchy Bookworm Vending Machine, Scholastic Books
b. Teachers – 0
c. Parents / Volunteers - 0
6) Cost of Materials needed: $5,515.00 (See attached)
