Teach children to write

Introduction:
There are four stages that kids go through when learning to write: preliterate,
emergent, transitional, and fluent.
Children love expressing their thoughts and ideas verbally. Putting those
thoughts on paper (writing) happens in stages that kids work through at their own pace.

Preliterate stage: Scribbling is good (0 to 2 years)

In the first stage of writing development, any scribbling or drawing a child does is
writing.

Tips for the preliterate stage

"Tell me what you wrote." Keep paper and crayons or Writing notes to that kid
markers easily accessible

Emergent stage: Letters appear in writing (2 to 4 years)

Kids in this stage are taking the big step from scribble writing to appreciating that
the "scribbles" grown-ups use for writing are symbols called letters.

Tips for the emergent stage

Teaching your child to write his name A great way to encourage reading is to find
helps him understand that letters are used time to read to your child every day.
to make words.

Transitional stage: Letters start to become words (4 to 7 years)

When kids start to realize that words are made up of sounds, and that letters
represent these sounds, they stop using random letters in their writing. Instead, they
start trying to match the sounds they hear in a word to letters they know.

Tips for the transitional stage

Encourage your transitional writer by making writing part of pretend play. Help her
write a menu for a tea party with her toys, or a prescription for you when you're
playing doctor.

Fluent stage: Spelling starts to have meaning (5 to 6 years)

Children begin to use "dictionary" spelling rather than "invented" spelling. The
spelling may not be accurate, but children are now aware that different spellings can
have different meanings.

Tips for the fluent stage

Try writing short letters to Another fun way to make If your child isn't in the
each other or family and writing a social activity is to fluent stage and wants to
friends. write shared stories:  play, he can dictate and
you can write.

Remember, each child goes through the stages of writing development at his
own pace. He will move from one stage to the next as he develops a greater
understanding of writing and his desire to write grows. Allowing your child to take his
time going through the stages helps him stay excited about writing. Observe, enjoy, and
encourage your child's growth within each stage.

The Issues on Invented Spelling and Mechanics of Writing

Its Role in the Learning Process
Introduction:
When you live in a world filled with LOLs and BRBs, it’s not surprising to see many
words with invented spellings. The trouble is, no award-winning author actually thought “tho”
was the correct way to spell “though.” So, does invented spelling fit anywhere into the learning
process? The honest answer is yes. Invented spelling isn't something that can be totally
avoided. In fact, it's a natural part of developing spelling skills.

About Invented Spelling:

Invented spelling, sometimes referred to as inventive spelling, is the practice of spelling

unfamiliar words with an educated guess based on phonetic knowledge.

"iz" for "is"

"flawrs" for "flowers"
"is cream" for "ice cream"
"lov" for "love"
"prpul" for "purple"
"culrs" for "colors"
"difrint" for "different"
Considerations for Invented Spelling
Many teachers consider invented spelling to be a developmentally appropriate step in
the early stages of a child’s reading and writing. Proponents argue that invented spelling does
not interfere with a child's ability to spell correctly in later years.

Invented spelling can be compared with the efforts a child makes when first learning to
speak. A parent wouldn’t criticize a child's first attempts to reproduce the sounds of the
verbal language. Accordingly, a child's efforts to master written communication skills
should also be encouraged. After all, young learners have to start somewhere.

Teaching the Mechanics

of Writing
Introduction:
In composition, writing mechanics are the conventions governing the technical
aspects of writing, including spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and abbreviations.
Getting your main points together can be a challenge, and one solution is to put
together a draft of main ideas before writing.
Spelling- is the correct arrangement of letters that form words.

TIPS

 To improve spelling skills, you can use a memory device known as

mnemonics. This memorable phrase, acronym or pattern can come in

handy for remembering something like the spelling of a word.

 You can also increase your reading skills, make a list of common words
you often misspell

Punctuation- is the set of marks used to regulate texts and clarify

their meanings, mainly by separating or linking words, phrases,
and clauses.

Capitalization-is the practice of using capital letters in writing or

printing.

Abbreviations- is a shortened form of
