Lines are used to make art. Lines can have different meanings. They are used to deliver a message. Lines are also used to show feelings and ideas. They can also show movement. There are different kinds of lines. They can be straight. This line seems to be standing. It is called a vertical line. | This line seems to be sleeping. It is called a horizontal line. | | | Some lines seem to be falling. They are called slanting lines. They are also called diagonal lines. | This line is called a zigzag line. You can show feelings and Movements, too. | Horizontal lines Lines are useful. They are used in art to show many things. They can show how a person is feeling. A line can also show movement. It can be long or short. It can be thick or thin. It can also be rough or smooth. Vertical lines suggest strength. They make objects look taller and stronger. Horizontal lines suggest balance. They make objects look wider and shorter. Diagonal lines or slanting lines show a feeling of excitement. These lines make objects look unstable or not balanced. . The straight lines on both sides look like walls. The curved lines in the middle show flowing movement forward. At the end, the movement seems to turn to the right. They show things in nature. Great Idea a Shapes can be found everywhere. There are natural or organic shapes. There are geometric shapes, too. They can all be used to make art. Just like a line, a shape is an element of art. When you put lines together, you create a shape. Look at the other things you see in the natural world? Look at their shapes. Shapes found in nature are called natural shapes. They are also called organic shapes. There is another set of shapes. They are called geometric shapes. They are man-made shapes. They are made up of points and lines. Some shapes can be curved. Others have straight sides. Look at the geometric shapes above Can you recognize them? How can the shapes above be used to show contrast? Contrast is an art principle. Contrast is shown when opposite elements are put together in one artwork. For example, light colors and dark colors that are used together show contrast. Below, the yellow and black pattern shows strong contrast. The use of large and small shapes can also show contrast. Why do you think so? ee Think ab Why is balance an important principle of art? ey Balance refers to the pleasing arrangement of elements. With balance, no part of the work overpowers or seems heavier than the other parts. Great Idea You have learned that lines, shapes, and colors are called elements of art. Artists try to arrange these elements in a pleasing manner. If they are, the artwork is said to have balance. Balance is a principle of art. There are three types of balance. Symmetrical balance (or formal balance) This is considered as the simplest kind of balance. It is shown in works where both sides show an even distribution of elements. The picture on the left is an example of symmetrical balance. ‘Symmetrical Balance Asymmetrical Balance Asymmetrical balance (or informal balance) This is shown in works that do not have even sides. The elements are not arranged equally, but it still gives a harmonious look. Look at the picture on the right, On one side of the picture there are four small trees. The other side has only one tree. Yet, it shows balance because the lone tree on the right is much taller, Its size gives the artwork asymmetrical balance. Radial balance occurs when objects are placed around a central point. What can you say about the size and measurement of the objects in the picture? Are they realistic or not? » Define and explain the principle of proportion. What do you think of artworks that are made to look this way? Think about this 2 Why is proportion important in art? Great Idea A change in Proportion can affect the way things in an artwork look like. In art, the size of an object compared to the human body or other objects is important. This is known as the principle of proportion. Have you noticed how some drawings of a person’s face called portraits seem almost real? This is because the parts of the drawing follow the correct proportion. This is called realistic proportion. It is called so because the sizes of parts of the drawing such as the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears is based on real or actual measurements. Sometimes, artists do not use the correct proportion. They e certain things bigger or smaller. This is called altered proportion. This is done to focus on an object. Look at the picture above. The bicycle is made to look bigger than the house.
