SEVEN-STEP CEPHALOMETRIC
TREATMENT PLANNING
Profile treatment planning involves antero.
posterior and vertical correction of dental anq/
or skeletal abnormalities to provide FAB correc.
tion. A seven-step cephalometric treatment plan
(CTP) is used to correct the face, airway and bite.
This process leads the practitioner logically and
consistently to excellent results. CTP, by defini-
tion, ignores midlines, canting, and yaw. Nor are
arch form, arch shape, and two-plane occlusion
discrepancies addressed. These issues are iden-
tified during the clinical examination and are cor-
rected with orthodontic mechanics or ,in the case
of surgery, with model surgery, the results of
which are transferred to the patient with the inter-
mediate splint. Anteroposterior and vertical infor-
mation from the CTP are used to address those
aspects of model surgery. CTP in conjunction with
the clinical exam (yaw, midlines, cants) positions
the articulator model surgery in three dimensions
of space and normalizes dentoskeletal parts.
In this portion of the chapter we will address
the seven steps of the CTP. The seven steps
and the normal values for males and females are
described fully by Arnett and Bergman in an ear
