Assessment is essentially the alignment of the activities' goals and outcomes, as assessing
reading becomes ineffective if well-planned learning outcomes are not assessed or met during or
after the teaching and learning process.
- Thus, we must always create an activity aligned with the objective of a lesson. For example, one
of your objectives is to differentiate the essence or importance of, let's say, writing and reading,
but the activity you have given is mainly a multiple-choice assessment or true or false.
- In that way, you won't be able to help the learner differentiate those two because multiple-choice
usually examines the student's understanding and their ability to apply their learning. One way to
line the assessment on your objective is to make them create a mind map or graphic organizer
discussing the difference as well as similarities between reading and writing. With that, the
learners can now differentiate those two, and learners will meet the learning objectives.
2. Moreover, Huba and Fred (2000) said that assessment is the process of gathering and discussing
information from multiple and diverse sources to develop a deep understanding of what students
know, understand, and can do with their knowledge as a result of their educational experiences.
- Gathering information is an act of collecting data or information from a variety of sources.
Assessment is one of the processes of gathering data as it helps a person to enhance their
knowledge as well as improve their ability to be critical thinkers. Upon gathering,
conceptualizing the information, and understanding the data from a wide variety of sources, one
can develop a depth understanding of a certain topic, assess oneself if he understood what he has
read, as well as use the gained knowledge and apply it in a real-life situation or share the process
of how they gained their knowledge to others.
3. Next, Erwin (1991) expressed that assessment is the systematic basis for making inferences about
the learning and development of students.
- Meaning assessment is the process of defining, selecting, designing, collecting, analyzing,
interpreting, and using the information to increase students’ learning and development. It comes
with a process and must be provided with factual evidence to come up with an effective learning
outcome that will develop the students. He expresses that assessment can be a reference to know
how a learner learns, it is the visible evidence that a learner's learning or knowledge retains in his
mind.
4. Paloba and Banta (1999) posit that assessment is the systematic collection, review, and use of
information about educational programs undertaken for the purpose of improving student learning
and development.
- Paloba and Banta basically want to convey that assessment is a process of using the information
on education with the view of improving the students. Also, they viewed assessment as a token of
students' improvement and development. the thoughts of Erwin and Paloba and Banta are quite
similar. The only difference is that Erwin views assessment as a reference of students learning
while paloba and banta concluded that assessment has the only purpose of improving the ability
of learners.
