Good evening everyone. I am Kristylle Renz Dela Cruz, together with Ms.

Raissa Trinidad and

Mrs. Leonila Zorilla. We will be discussing the assessment of the reading performance of learners.

The Assessment of Reading Performance

 So, assessment plays a critical role in teaching and learning. These are measured to ascertain
how and how much instructional delivery is carried out.
- Educators must use assessment as a tool to make room for improvement. Improving student
learning will always be the primary goal of assessment. Assessment must use to find out and
observe the student's learning capacity as well as conceptualize a more helpful teaching technique
to make their learning more effective.
- Assessments are used for evaluation as well. It evaluates whether a student learns or not. It also
provides intrinsic motivation as it teaches us to learn from our mistakes, and hard work always
pays off. For example, a teacher conducted a pre-test, and a student got a low score or an average
score. It is their responsibility to identify when and why they are wrong. With that, they will be
motivated to listen attentively in class or pay attention to what the teacher says as they are eager
to find out the correct answer and get a higher grade. After studying hard, the student then finds
out the correct answer, thus resulting in the student getting a high grade on the post-assessment.

 Assessment is essentially the alignment of the activities' goals and outcomes, as assessing
reading becomes ineffective if well-planned learning outcomes are not assessed or met during or
after the teaching and learning process.
- Thus, we must always create an activity aligned with the objective of a lesson. For example, one
of your objectives is to differentiate the essence or importance of, let's say, writing and reading,
but the activity you have given is mainly a multiple-choice assessment or true or false.
- In that way, you won't be able to help the learner differentiate those two because multiple-choice
usually examines the student's understanding and their ability to apply their learning. One way to
line the assessment on your objective is to make them create a mind map or graphic organizer
discussing the difference as well as similarities between reading and writing. With that, the
learners can now differentiate those two, and learners will meet the learning objectives.

On the Concept of Assessment

 Assessment in reading instruction allows the students to check their own understanding and monitor
progress in the attainment of learning objectives and the development of reading comprehension
skills.
- Meaning assessing reading will not only improve their reading skills but also allows the student
to evaluate their own knowledge, track their progress toward learning objectives, and improve
their reading comprehension abilities.
 This prompts you, prospective teachers, that every academic engagement is within the realms of the
intended learning outcomes.
- Hence, this also serves as a reminder to us, as future educators, that every academic activity falls
under the scope of the desired learning outcomes. As I have said earlier, objectives and activities
or teaching strategies MUST always be aligned or connected to each other. Because you, as a
future teacher, need to make sure that the assessment measures or captures what you intend for
them to demonstrate or learn within a time frame, which is why many people regard this as a
necessary element of teaching-learning.
- In addition, learning objectives should be developmentally appropriate. It means that teachers
should consider the developmental stages of the students they are teaching. The objectives that
the teacher states and use should be easy for the students to achieve and should take their prior
learning experiences into consideration. Here, prominent experts and researchers point out some
ideas or concepts and the purpose of assessment.
Researchers:
1. Allen (2004) , he claims that assessment involves the use of empirical data on student learning to
refine programs and improve student learning.
- When we say empirical data, their learning or a student’s learning comes with observation or
based on their experience. For example, your teacher has given an activity of reading a specific
poem. He starts to demonstrate how a specific poem was red. He emphasizes the correct
intonation and pronunciation of words. Hoping to perform well, you observe attentively on the
teacher. Thus, you performed very well on the presentation. You have read all the lines correctly
with the integration of correct usage of grammar, intonation, pronunciation, and expression. With
that, observing your teacher on how she reads a poem makes you successful in reading it as well.
- So, it is indeed useful to apply observation with regards to reading as you will improve lots of
your abilities by applying it. The observation can be seen or achieve in numerous ways like
observing how your teacher reads a dialogue, how a character from a drama deliver’s his line, the
intonation of a poet in a poetry contest, and the delivery of words in a speech competition.

2. Moreover, Huba and Fred (2000) said that assessment is the process of gathering and discussing
information from multiple and diverse sources to develop a deep understanding of what students
know, understand, and can do with their knowledge as a result of their educational experiences.
- Gathering information is an act of collecting data or information from a variety of sources.
Assessment is one of the processes of gathering data as it helps a person to enhance their
knowledge as well as improve their ability to be critical thinkers. Upon gathering,
conceptualizing the information, and understanding the data from a wide variety of sources, one
can develop a depth understanding of a certain topic, assess oneself if he understood what he has
read, as well as use the gained knowledge and apply it in a real-life situation or share the process
of how they gained their knowledge to others.
3. Next, Erwin (1991) expressed that assessment is the systematic basis for making inferences about
the learning and development of students.
- Meaning assessment is the process of defining, selecting, designing, collecting, analyzing,
interpreting, and using the information to increase students’ learning and development. It comes
with a process and must be provided with factual evidence to come up with an effective learning
outcome that will develop the students. He expresses that assessment can be a reference to know
how a learner learns, it is the visible evidence that a learner's learning or knowledge retains in his
mind.

4. Paloba and Banta (1999) posit that assessment is the systematic collection, review, and use of
information about educational programs undertaken for the purpose of improving student learning
and development.
- Paloba and Banta basically want to convey that assessment is a process of using the information
on education with the view of improving the students. Also, they viewed assessment as a token of
students' improvement and development. the thoughts of Erwin and Paloba and Banta are quite
similar. The only difference is that Erwin views assessment as a reference of students learning
while paloba and banta concluded that assessment has the only purpose of improving the ability
of learners.
