Molecules Tests and how they are carried out.

Test for Proteins-Biuret solution

Obtain sample in test tube and add drops of Biuret solution to the sample. If proteins are
present in the sample, then it will turn from blue to purple.

Test for carbohydrates-iodine and benedicts solution

Iodine- collect food sample and add drops of iodine solution to it if the sample turns from a
orange/brown to blue/black starch is present.
Benedicts- add drops of benedict solution to the sample which is in the test tube. You then heat
this to 60/70 degrees in a water bath and not a direct Bunsen burner, do this for 5 minutes.
Then when taking the sample observe if there is a color change and if a reducing sugar is
present it will turn from blue to orange- brick red. However, if it is a non-reducing sugar, you
must boil the sample along with the addition of HCL ,prior to adding the benedicts solution.

Tests for lipids- Emulsion test

Mix sample with 2cm3 of ethanol and shake the test tube. Get some water at the same volume
and add each other to the same test tubes. If a lipid is present the sample will turn into a cloudy
white color.
