Field Experience 1- Demographics

Part 1: Introduction
My internship is at Autism Academy for Education and Development located in Tempe,
Arizona. I am working with 12 7th & 8th grade students that vary in ages 14-25. The total
population of the school is 680 on all 4 campuses. The campus I am interning at is the Tempe
campus which has a total of 125 students. There are 13 teachers and 28 support staff.

Part 2: The School and the School System

The school system is made up of 4 different campuses across Arizona. The Gilbert campus is
made up of elementary students grades K-5. The Tempe campus is made up of middle school
and high school students which is 6th-12. The Tucson campus is made up of K-12. The Glendale
campus is K-12. The Peoria Campus is K-12.

The Tempe campus has more Females than males.

For the entire school, the white population makes up the majority. As for the primary school
population, Whites make up the majority of the student body, as well.

The teachers have all different kinds of diversity throughout the school system. There are equal
numbers of Latinos and Whites in all 4 campuses.

Part 3: The Classroom


There are twelve students in my classroom. There are 6 boys and 6 girls. There is no lunch
program at the school, they have to bring their own lunch. The students represent 4 ethnic groups
as stated below.

Part IV- The Parent/ Student Handbook

Attendance Policy
There are 180 days of school. The students must have 90% attendance as per the Arizona
Department of Education. There are excused absences if there is a doctors appointment or the
student is sick. If the student is sick for more than 3 consecutive days, they must bring a doctors
note to school to be marked excused. The student will have time to make up their school work
per the number of days of school missed. If students have 10 unexcused absences, they will be
expelled from the school.

Dress Code
The students must have good and clean clothes at school everyday. They are not allowed to
show their shoulders and have a one inch strap. The skirts and dresses must be no shorter than
two inches from the top of the knee. Leggings can be worn under a skirt or dress but not alone
with no garments over top of them, They must wear closed toe shoes with a strap on the heel.
They can wear hats if they are not a distraction. Shirts cannot have profane or or deflamatory
writing on them, There cannot be any drugs, alchol, or sex symbols on the shirt. They cannot
wear biker shorts, trench coats, halter tops, spaghetti straps, or sagging pants.

Behavior Expectations/ Consequences

The students must promise to be safe, be respectful, be responsible, be the best they can be. If
they fight, or have physical altercations, they will not be allowed to go on field trips. Also, they
will have to attend school suspension. Some major offenses may include leaving school with no
permission, cheating, using drugs or alcohol, vandalism, gang related activities. Harrasment may
include verbally, threanting text messages, sexually, assualt. If a student brings any kind of
firearm or devices this may result in explosion.

Parents

Parents must check the student portal including grades and health information. It is their
responsibility to update their address , emergency contact list, or medications for their child.

Health and Safety

If a student has COVID or influenza symptoms they must notify the school and stay quarantined
at their homes. The school is sanitized daily to prevent any germs or sickness from spreading
around the campus. Parents have the right to decide whether or not their child has vannications,
although the school strongly recommends it. If they are vaccinated, they must provide an
immunization record to the office, If a student has any of the following symptoms they must stay
home. The symptoms include fever over 100 degrees, sore throat, severe headache, votimming,
rash, shortness of breath, watery eyes.

Part V- Reflection

The information from this handbook has provided me a way to understand the school and student
body to a higher degree. It will assist me in knowing the students' backgrounds and rules so I can
understand them in a different way. I can help the teachers in any way possible as I know the
rules and consequences.
