DEFINITION OF TERMS
ASEXUAL
Binary fission: parent cell divides into two daughter cells

Fission: separation of a parent into two or more offspring of about equal


size

Budding: outgrowth and eventual splitting off of a new individual from a


parent

Fragmentation: breaking of of the parent body into several pieces, followed


by regeneration, and the regrowth of body parts
DEFINITION OF TERMS
SEXUAL
Hermaphroditism: individual has both female and male reproductive
systems

External fertilization: gametes are discharged into the outside


environment, followed by fertilization

Internal fertilization: sperm are deposited in or near the female


reproductive tract and gametes unite within the tract

Parthenogenesis: form of reproduction in which the new individual
develops from an unfertilized egg
