Anchor 1: Today we are going to talk about the Presidency of Joseph

Estrada

Anchor 2: Joseph Estrada is also known as "Erap", A Filipino

Politician and Former actor. He served as the 13th President of the
Philippines from 1998 to 2001 and also the 9th Vice President of the
Philippines from 1992 to 1998.
Anchor 1: Joseph Estrada is the 21st mayor of Manila City or Country's
Capital from 2013 to 2019. He became the first chief executive in Asia
to be formally impeached and resigned from power.

Anchor 2: At the age of 85, he is currently the oldest living former

Philippine President.

Anchor 2: Estrada gained popularity as a film actor, playing the

roles in over a hundred films in an acting career, at the age of 13 he
also worked as a model. He used his popularity as an actor to makes
gains in Politics serving as a mayor of San Juan from 1969 to 1986.

Anchor 1: Estrada was elected president in 1998 with wide margin of

votes and was sworn into the presidency on June 30, 1998. In 2000 he
declared an "all-out-war" against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front
and captured its headquarters and other camps.

Anchor 2: The allegations of corruption spawned an impeachment trial

in the Senate, and in 2001 Estrada was ousted by People Power 2. After
the prosecution walked out of the impeachment court when the senator-
judges voted not to open an envelope that allegedly contained
incriminating evidence against him.

Anchor 1: In 2007, Estrada was sentenced by a special division of the

Sandiganbayan to reclusion perpetual under a charge of plunder for the
embezzlement of $80 Million from the government.

Anchor 2: Estrada denied the accusations, calling them politically

motivated, and he remained relatively popular in the Philippines
despite the charges. In September 2007 he was convicted of plundering
and sentenced to a maximum of 40 years in prison but was later granted
a pardon by the president and his former deputy Gloria Macapagal
Arroyo.

Anchor 2: Estrada ran for president again in the 2010 presidential

election but was defeated by Senator Benigno Aquino III by a wide
margin. He later served as mayor of Manila for two terms from 2013 to
2019.

Anchor 1: In 2013 Estrada ran for mayor of Manila and defeated the
incumbent, Alfredo Lim. After taking office later that year, he faced
a number of issues, notably the city’s debt and inability to pay for
basic services. In order to raise revenue, he sharply raised property
taxes. Estrada faced a serious challenge from Lim in the 2016 race but
narrowly won reelection. He ran for a third term in 2019 but was
defeated.
Anchor 2: Joseph “Erap” Ejercito Estrada captivated the country by
being known as a “man for the masses.” Empathizing with the plight of
the masses has been his gift. His ability to connect with people made
him one of the most popular presidents of the republic, despite the
many controversies that have been hurled against him.

Aquino III.

Anchor 1: Benigno Aquino III also known as "Ninoy", the Presidency of

Benigno Aquino III began on June 30, 2010 when he became the 15th
President of the Philippines. Aquino is the third youngest person
elected president.

Anchor 2: Aquino reformed the Country's basic education system by

establishing the K-12 program. He enacted the Reproductive Health Bill
providing universal access to methods of contraception.

Anchor 1: He launched the public-private partnership program to hasten

infrastructure development, and formed a commission to investigate
issues and corruption allegations against his predecessor, President
Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Anchor 2: Aquino extended the moderation program of the military for

15 years. He signed the enhanced defense cooperation agreement
allowing the United States military to rotate troops into the
Philippines for extended stays and authorizing us to build and operate
facilities on Philippines bases.

Anchor 2: Aquino oversaw the Manila hostage crisis, the impeachment of

chief Justice Renato Corono, the Typhoon Yolanda government response,
the Zamboanga City crisis and the Mamasapano clash.
Anchor 1: Aquino emerged as a potential candidate for the Philippines
presidency in 2007 after placing sixth in the 2007 Philippines Senate
Election where he received 14, 309, 349 votes.

Anchor 2: initially he was not the designated standard bearer for the
presidential elections by his political party the Liberal Party which
originally designed his ally. Senator Manuel "Mar" Roxas as the
standard bearer on November 26, 2008.

Anchor 1: Following the death of his mother president Corazon Aquino

do to colorectal cancer there was an outpouring of nostalgia among the
public for the former democracy icons brand of clean, honest, and
selfless public service.

Anchor 1: Supporters of the Aquino family called on Noynoy or to run

for presidency, in what has been called "The Noynoy Phenomenon" to
continue his mother's legacy.

Anchor 2: On august 27 2009 Edgardo "Eddie" Roces. Former publisher

and owner of the manila times, and the group of lawyers and activists
form the Noynoy Aquino for President Movement, and nationwide campaign
to collect a million signatures to persuade Aquino to run for
President.

Anchor 1: Pivotal to Aquino’s presidential candidacy was roxas

announcement of his withdrawal from the presidential grace and
nomination of Aquino to be his party's presidential standard bearer.

Anchor 2: The presidential transition began on June 9 2010 when the

congress of the Philippines proclaimed Aquino as the winner of the
2010 Philippine Presidential Elections held on may 10 2010 proclaiming
Aquino as a president-elect of the Philippines.

Anchor 2: The transition was in charge of the new presidential

residence, cabinet appointments and cordial meetings between them and
outgoing administration.

Anchor 1: The Muntinlupa-Cavite Expressway was the first PPP project

approved by the Aquino administration, with Ayala Corporation winning
the concession to build and operate P 2.2 Billion four-kilometer toll
road on December 16, 2011. Several other PPP project were also
approved, constructed or completed during the Aquino administration.

Anchor 2: In 2011, the Aquino administration lunch the National

Greening Program as a priority program to help reduce poverty, promote
food security, environmental stability and, biodiversity
conservation as well as enhance climate change mitigation and
adaptation in the country. This Program paved the way for the planting
of almost 1.4 billion seedlings in about 1.66 million hectares
Nationwide during the 2011-2016 periods.
