PROPOSED TITLE 1: SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS AS A SUPPLEMENT TO ENHANCE

LEARNING SKILLS OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND

MATHEMATICS STUDENTS ON THE NEW NORMAL LEARNING IN DANIEL

MARAMBA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR 2022-2023.

RATIONALE:

Technology nowadays is common among schools, offices, and to every individual, as this

supports learning and helps in developing knowledge, wherein, integration is the use of

technology to enhance, reiterate, present, and assess how students understand the syllabus or the

program. Moreover, this supports both teaching and learning (Mendoza, et al., 2015). As

advance technology arises, the use of social media has become prevalent around the world.

Throughout the years, social media continues to develop and evolve. In the Philippines, during

the Corona Virus Diseases 2019 pandemic, different social media platforms play a vital role for

people to cope with the current phenomena. Social media is being used to communicate, as an

entertainment, to spread information and even to educate.

For the School Year 2022-2023, education in the Philippines on the new normal

continues with the observance of health protocols. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic's profound

consequences, there have been numerous modifications made to the school system. In order to

comply with the rules, norms, and practices of the new normal, it has been difficult for students

to fully understand their studies due to the sudden transition from home based learning to in

person classes. Many students struggled to adjust to the significant changes, which made

learning challenging. There are a variety of issues that students face, including reading
comprehension difficulties in comprehending the lesson, difficulty in remembering what they

have learned, inability to follow directions, and verbal instructions are insufficient to ensure that

they have apprehended the lessons. Therefore, the ability to use the internet is incredibly useful

for both educators and learners. They surf the internet for the purpose of communication,

learning, entertainment, gathering information, news and updates, socializing, and more.

Based on datareportal there were 92.05 million social media users in the Philippines in

January 2022. Furthermore, according to Philippine Statistics Authority, Filipino students 10 to

30 years old used the internet more frequently for social media (86.8%). Indeed, there is a high

population of students that are users of social media. As reported by the University of Arizona

Global Campus, social media promotes self-directed learning, which prepares students to search

for answers and make decisions independently. When reinforced in a classroom setting, these

social media skills can be guided and refined to produce better learning outcomes and critical

awareness. Social media also allows students more freedom to connect and collaborate beyond

the physical classroom, which means students anywhere can start to experience the globally

connected world long before they enter the workforce.

According to Chanboualapha, S. & Islam, R. (2012) internet usage has the positive

relationship with students’ learning as higher of using internet and higher of grade. However, the

use of era technology and students’ learning in developed country are absolutely higher than

developing country. Thus, we ensure that internet usage is a positive relationship with students’

learning. Moreover, students always use Facebook and Messenger, often use YouTube, TikTok,

and Instagram, and sometimes use other social media platforms. They considered social media

platforms significant, effective, and beneficial in accessing learning opportunities such as

updated with their assignments, learning tasks, announcements, and supplementary materials
(Madrigal, 2022). Thus, this study is to find out the use of social media platforms as a tool in

enhancing student’s learning experiences.

OBJECTIVES:
This research aims to investigate the role of using social media as supplement to enhance

learning skills of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics students on the new

normal learning in Daniel Maramba National High School for the school year 2022-2023. This

problem sought to answer specifically the following questions:

1. How do STEM students use social media to enhance their learning skills in the new

normal set up?

2. What platforms on social media are primarily used by STEM students in order to enhance

their learning skills?

3. How useful is the role of social media platforms in enhancing learning skills in terms of:

a. Memory retention

b. Lesson comprehension

c. Study participation

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

In this quantitative research, o determine the role of social media in enhancing Science,

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics students learning skill on the new normal learning

the researcher adopted the descriptive research design, specifically survey research. Survey

research is a specific type of field study that involves the collection of data from a sample of

elements drawn from a well-defined population through the use of a questionnaire (Visser, et al.,

2000). This type of survey research's main goal was to promptly gather information from the

respondents that is related to the study.

Sources of Data (Materials and Procedures)

The respondents of this study are the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics

students of Daniel Maramba National High School located at Poblacion Norte, Sta. Barbara,

Pangasinan. The respondents will be given a survey questionnaire designed by the researcher

which will be used as the primary data gathering tool.
