PROPOSED TITLE 1: BLINDED OR MOTIVATED: REVERBERATIONS OF ROMANTIC

RELATIONSHIPS ON THE ACADEMIC COMMISSIONS OF SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

STUDENTS AT DANIEL MARAMBA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL IN A.Y. 2022-2023

RATIONALE

From time to time, the world’s view changes depending on the generational dynamics that

humanity holds on. Every period has its significant characteristics, uniqueness, and qualities

concerning every aspect of life. One of those nowadays related facets includes empirical and

censorious scrutinization – the pertinent romantic relationships.

Romantic relationships have been described in terms of closeness, emotionality, and the

yearning for intimacy (Shulman, et al., 2011). It involves the system of social science; a

connection between humans. As further defined by the Social Science LibreTexts, “Mutual,

ongoing and voluntary interactions between two partners that is characterized by specific

expressions of affection and intimacy.”

Romantic relationships can negatively and positively influence a student's academic

performance and responsibilities. Furthermore, there are no known studies that deal with the in-

depth connection of romantic relationships to students’ academic performance and

responsibilities in the Senior High School (SHS) department at Daniel Maramba National High

School (DMNHS) for the Academic Year (A.Y.) 2022-2023.

Thus, the researcher vied to determine the correlational reverberations of students with

romantic relationships and those without any connection to romantic relationships regarding their

academic performance and responsibilities. Moreover, which has more academic

accomplishments and success.

Having a relationship can be a great source of strength and support once you do it right.

You'll have a helping hand whenever you need one and someone cheering you on through hard

times and lifting you whenever you're down. Many people have defined the term “romantic

relationship” differently based on their perspectives, experiences, and preferences. According to

Matsumoto (2011), “When you have a romantic relationship with someone, you share attitudes,

visions, dreams, strengths, and vulnerabilities with that person, and there is also some kind of

mutual support.”

Young people spend much of their time thinking about, talking about, and being in

romantic relationships (Furman, 2002). Most people are motivated or inspired to pursue their

goals by being in a love relationship.

Although some people believe that having a relationship while studying can be beneficial,

opponents of this idea would argue that teenage relationships can cause problems in academic

performance in some ways. Based on a study at the University of the Philippines by Bernales and

Colonia (2011), when teenagers are involved in romantic relationships, they tend to pay less
attention to their academic work. The study reveals that students who engage in relationships are

unable to manage their time well and mostly spend only 1 to 4 hours per week on their studies.

More time is devoted to varied dating activities such as love and the desire to maintain the

relationship deepen, leaving less time for studying (Newman, n.d.). This propensity subsequently

relates to students' attendance in classes; it was noted that they often miss three or more classes

per semester (Schmidt & Lockwood, 2015). Campbell & Oliver (1994) pointed out some costs

which are found in a romantic relationship, namely: stress and worry about the relationship,

social and nonsocial sacrifices, increased dependence on the partner, fights, time and effort

investment, and feeling worse about the self which was said to be the cause of anxiety of the

students.

The researcher highly and logically believes that having a romantic relationship can

negatively influence the SHS student’s academic performance and responsibilities. Whereas,

students without any inclination toward a romantic relationship succeed more in academic

performance and responsibilities.

As to reiterate, the researcher aims to determine and study how romantic relationship affects

SHS students at DMNHS. Furthermore, vied to examine the experimental reverberations of those

students having romantic relationships and those without any connection to romantic

relationships regarding their academic performance and responsibilities. Moreover, which has

more academic accomplishments and success.

OBJECTIVES:

Students are aware that love can negatively and positively influence academic performance

depending on how they relate to themselves. This research study examines the Reverberations of

Romantic Relationships among SHS Students on their Academic Commissions. Distinctively, it

sought to answer the following question-goals:

1. Why do students decide to get involved in a romantic relationship while studying? In

terms of the following components:

a. Motivation

b. Pleasure

2. How significant is a romantic relationship in distracting students’ attention from their

studies?

3. Is there any significant correlational relationship between having a romantic relationship

and academic commissions?

Chapter II

METHODOLOGY

Research Design

To determine the impact of having a Romantic Relationship on the Academic

Performance of Senior High School Students, the researcher chooses a quantitative research

study, especially correlational research design aims to investigate the relationships between two

variables (or more) without the researcher controlling or manipulating any of them. Those

students experience romantic relationships and those students do not. Correlational research

design is a type of non-experimental research where the researcher employs the data derived

from preexisting variables. There is no manipulation of the variables in that type of research.

Besides, correlational research is useful in a wide variety of studies.

Sources of Data (Materials and Procedures)

The participants of this study are the Senior High School Students of Daniel Maramba

National High School situated at Poblacion Norte, Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan. In this research, the

researcher needs to get the data to deal with the frequency of negatively influencing academic

performance depending on how they relate to themselves as Senior High School Students.
