Effective listening is arguably one of the most important skill to have nowadays.
Personal relationship need effective listening skills to face complicated situations
together.

Students and professionals need it to understand complex issues in their field.


To sum up, it is vital if we understand and eliminate listening barriers that
blocks deep, harmonious and lasting relationships.
Environmental barriers
Environmental barriers to effective listening include furniture placement,
environmental noise such as sounds of traffic or people talking, physiological
noise such as a sinus headache or hunger, and psychological noise such as stress
or anger.
Examples:

1.) The room is too hot or cold.

Linguistics barriers
Linguistic barrier is probably one of the most common obstacles to effective
listening. It can exist when there is a language difference between the two
individuals talking or when one person has a poor understanding of the spoken
language.
Examples of Linguistic barriers

1. Using jargon words


2. Monotonous voice
3. Complex sentences
4. Delivery too fast or too slow
5. Delivery too loud and too quiet.
Psychological barrier
Psychological barriers are similar to emotional barriers, but they are based on our
thoughts rather than feelings. Sometimes, we tend to assume we know what the
other person is going to say, think about what we’re going to say next, or judge the
person we’re listening to.
Examples of Psychological barriers:
1.) Anger
2.) Anxiety
3.) Frustration
4.) Inability to put across ideas.
5.) Prejudice
Content barrier
What the speaker saying may also be a barrier to the listener.
1.) Subject of the discussion do not interest us.
2.) Speaker goes on for too long
3.) We have heard it all before.
4.) Content is too difficult.
How can we eliminate the barriers to
effective listening?
