TRAINING ASSESSMENT DAY 1

1. What is the definition of

 An electrolyte
Electrolyte is a substance which will
conduct a current and breakdown by it i.e.
dissociate into positive and negative irons.
 Corrosion
Corrosion is the degradation of a material by
chemical or electrochemical means.

2. If zinc and aluminium were in contact, which would corrode?

 Zinc

3. On a British Gas site, what material is used to blast clean

Stainless Steel?
 Aluminium Oxide

4. Which health problem is associated with dry blasting using

sand?
 Preumonicosis or silicosis

5. What is the minimum standard of cleanliness required by British

Gas?
 SA 2.5 or ST2

6. How many photographs of blast clean standards are in BS

7079?
 14

7. What is Mill scale, how is it caused, and what is its general

thickness?
 Mill scale is a thin, black, flaky, hard layer of oxidized iron
formed at temperature in excess of 580deg during the
rolling operation of steel sections .Thickness 25-
100micron.
8. What are the three compounds found in mill scale?
 FEO also known as WUSTITE
 FE3O4 also known as MAGNETITE
 FE2O3 also known as HAEMATITE

9. What factors influence the rate of corrosion?

 Temperature, hygroscopic salts, Aerobic conditions
(presence of oxygen). Acids and Alkalis, Bimetallic
contact, Presence of bacteria on surface (sulphur
reducing bacteria and metal eating nucrobes, SRB and
MEM.

10. Describe the four rust grades A, B, C and D?

 GRADE A: Highly bonded (or new) mill scale. (Blue mill
scale) with little or no corrosion.
 GRADE B: Some loose mill scale, which can be scrapped
off, very light corrosion.
 GRADE C: Evident corrosion ,mill scale no longer present
 GRADE D: Steel surface on which mill scale has rusted
away and on which general pitting is visible under normal
vision.
