EN MATH 1 – DIFFERENTIAL CALCULUS
Activity #1: Functions Name: _ Course/Yr/Block: _
Intended Learning Outcome: To be able to identify and evaluate functions, construct a
functional notation and evaluate limits of a function. Content/Topics: Functions Directions: Solve the following problems on a clean sheet of paper. Show a complete solution and write legibly. Use ballpens only.
Construct a functional notation on the following problems.
1. Express the volume of a cube as a function of the length of an edge. 2. A rectangular storage container with an open top and a square base has a volume of 8 cubic meters. Material for the base costs $5 per square meter and material for the sides $2 per square meter. Find a formula that expresses the total cost of materials as a function of the length of a side of the base. 3. You want to paint the top of a circular table. Find a formula that expresses the amount of paint required as a function of the radius.
Shown below is a set of ordered pairs (x,y) does it represent a function? Why? Why not?
4. (5, -8), (9, -5), (7, -5)
(5-7) Evaluate the following function:
If 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥2 − 4𝑥, find
5. 𝑓(−4) 6. 𝑓(𝑥 + 1) − 𝑓(𝑥 − 1) 7. 𝑓(𝑦2 + 1)
