Layout - Job Shop Design

Job Shop Design
(Facility Design)

• Flexible flow routing

• Determining factors to layouting
– Material flow ( to/from)
– Operator movement
– Technological necessity/constraint
– Proximity to utility supply.
– Handling cost
Measure proximity requirement
• Proximity requirement is the necessity one
station should be adjacent to another.
• Material flow, operator movement and
handling cost are measurable parameters for
known product types (can be qualitative)
• Technological necessities are constraints.
Qualitatively measuring adjacency
• A RELationship chart or simply a REL chart, is a
qualitative representation of the proximity
factors
Example REL Chart for five operations
Total Closeness Rating
• Total Closeness Rating for operation i is
calculated using the following equation.

• Example
TCR1 = V(O)+V(A)+V(I)+V(E)+V(A)
=3+81+9+27+81
=201
From the REL chart to numerical index.
• To generate a space relationship diagram
assign the following values to the closeness
ratings ri,
Step to use TCR for Layout
• Step 1. Gather info to construct the REL Chart
• Step 2. Calculate the TCR for each operation
• Step 3. the station/operation with the highest
TCR takes the center position since it needs to be
connected to most other operations.
• In the same way the next operation with the next
highest TCR will be positioned at a somewhat
center position.
• The procedure continues based on the TCR values
Example
TCR1 = V(O)+V(A)+V(I)+V(E)+V(A)
=3+81+9+27+81
=201
TCR2 = V(O)+V(O)+V(U)+V(U)+V(U)
=3+3+1+1+1
=9
TCR3 = V(A)+V(O)+V(I)+V(U)+V(O)
=81+3+9+1+3
=97
TCR4 = V(I)+V(U)+V(I)+V(U)+V(O)
=9+1+9+1+3
=23
TCR5 = V(E)+V(U)+V(U)+V(U)+V(U)
=27+1+1+1+1
= 31
TCR6 = V(A)+V(U)+V(O)+V(O)+V(U)
=81+1+3+3+1
=89
