Social scientists predict that by 2050 the world
population will have
which 80% will live in Farms increased to 9.1 million of
cities, however, the space
for farms will be the same as it is today. For such, it’s
important for us, people, of the to start choosing for
different alternatives for agriculture now; because if we don’t, by the half of the 21
century we will need a larger area tan the Brazilian amazon forest to subsidize this
need. Experts are starting to offer alternatives such as: vertical and rooftop farms.
Rooftop farms are an effective alternative, which consists on building urban farms on
rooftops. It allows plants to get the enough sunlight they need for surviving .But they
are really expensive, and might not succeed on the market place for a long time
because of the high prices.
Vertical farms are a more affordable alternative, by which crops can grow on
skyscrapers. Vertically grown food cause much less environmental impact, when
using vertical farms we don’t force animals out of their habitat. Negative effects and
costs of long-distance food transportation, causing pollution decrease. On the
negative side, in vertical farming plants sometimes don’t get the enough sunlight that
they need.
I think it is really important for us to use more sustainable alternatives for farming
and agriculture, not only for having more affordable food prices but also for helping
our planet. We shouldn’t just choose the most convenient choice but also change our
consumption levels.
