Praxair’s Refinery Gas Upgrading Technology

Overview
Capability
• This Technology is capable of economically
recovering the stranded hydrogen from the fuel gas
header in a refinery.

Characteristics/Superiority

• Simple process flow-sheet.

• Lower capital cost than similar Technologies (e.g.
CryoPlus).
• No CO2 formation.
• Economics are influenced by site specific conditions
• Hydrogen purity of as high as 99.9% is achievable.
• Competitive with small methane reformer.

Candidate Refineries

• Need for 10-20 MMSCFD incremental hydrogen.

• The Incremental hydrogen need is available in the
refinery gas.
• Have keen interest in hydrogen than fractionated
LPG products (although raw LPG recovery is not
excluded).

Process Economic Factors

• Refinery gas composition: Hydrogen content,

Methane, C2+, N2.
• Impurities Content: Benzene, n-hexane, etc.
• Refinery gas header pressure.
• Hydrogen purity requirements.
• LPG recovery.
