GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
1. All questions are compulsory. There are 18 questions in all.
2. The question paper has four sections: Section A, Section B, Section C, and Section D.
3. Section A contains 6 multiple choice question of 1 marks each, Section B contains 6
short answer question of 2 marks each, Section C contains 4 short answer questions of
3 marks each and section D contains 2 long answer questions of 5 marks each.
4. There is no overall choice. However internal choice is provided. You have to attempt
only one of the choices in such questions.

SECTION A

SECTION B

7. A body whose moment of inertia is 3 kg-m2 is at rest. It is rotated for 20 second with
a moment of force 6N-m. Calculate the (i) angular displacement of the body (ii) and work
done.

8. A ring and a solid sphere, both of same mass and radius are allowed to rolls down
from the same inclined plane. They are rolled one by one from the same height (h).
Which one reaches the bottom earliest? Justify.

9. Give the radius of gyration of following about their geometrical axis.


(i) Hollow sphere (ii) Ring

10. An object of mass 10 kg is moving with velocity of 10 m/s. A force of 50 N acts upon
it for 2s. Find percentage increase in its kinetic energy?

11. Two particles of masses Ma and Mb and velocities Va and Vb, respectively collides.
After collision, if they interchange their velocities, then what will be the ratio of Ma and
M b?

12. At what height above the surface of the earth the weight of the man becomes half of
his actual weight, if the radius of earth equals to 6400 km.

Determine the orbital velocity of a satellite orbiting near the surface of the earth (mass =
Me and radius = Re )

SECTION C

13. In elastic collision in one-dimension, prove that the relative velocity of separation
after collision is equal to the relative velocity of approach before collision.

14. A body of mass 2 kg initially at rest moves under the action of applied horizontal
force of 7N on a table with coefficient of kinetic friction = 0.1.
Compute the (i) work done by the applied force in 10s (ii) work done by friction in 10s
and (iii) work done by the net force on the body in 10s.

15. Derive the expression for the escape speed of a body on the surface of earth using
law of conservation of energy.

16. Derive the expression for the elastic potential energy stored in the spring.

OR
A body of mass 5kg is thrown vertically up with a kinetic energy 490 J. Find the height
at which the kinetic energy of the body becomes half of the original value.

SECTION D

17. (i) The distance between the centers of two stars is 10a. The masses of these stars
are M and 16M and their radii ‘a’ and 2a, respectively. A body of mass m is fired straight
from the surface of the larger star towards the smaller star. What should be its
minimum initial speed to reach near the surface of the smaller star? Obtain the
expression in terms of G, M and a.

(ii) A body of mass m kept in a satellite has zero apparent weight. Justify.

18. Derive an expression for the moment of inertia of a thin uniform rod about an axis
through its center and perpendicular to its length. Also, determine the radius of
gyration about the same axis.

OR

Derive an expression for the moment of inertia of circular disc of mass M and radius R
about an axis passing through its center and perpendicular to its plane. Also determine
the radius of gyration about the same axis.
