. In Read Aloud you are scored on pronunciation and oral fluency. You will see a short
text on the screen. You will be given either 30, 35 or 40 seconds to read it before the
computer starts recording you. You will have the same amount of time again for the
recording.
1.When recording instruments or vocals, not every place in a room is equal. Generally,
for vocals, the singer should never sing directly into a hard surface, and should always
be pointed towards the middle of the room and the microphone. A quality microphone,
located in front of the singer, will best record both the placement and the performance.
3. In the highly scientific modern era, success in professional rugby careers can come
down to tiny details and, while it's accepted that no team should have an obvious
advantage physically, the precise movement of this war dance is designed to give a
clear and unfair psychological advantage.
5.For the first time, scientists have succeeded in studying the calls of parrot chicks in
the wild. They find that the birds learn their first calls from their parents, much as human
infants do. The findings suggest that parrots may be better than songbirds as models for
studying how humans acquire speech.
10.The mass media face a number of pressures that can prevent them accurately
showing competing scientific claims within the scientific community. Determining how
much weight to give different opinions in a scientific debate could require considerable
expertise in a scientific field, which few journalists possess.
11.While many people understand the benefits of exercise, they do not always get the
exercise that they need. Common reasons given for not exercising include tiredness, a
lack of time and a lack of confidence if they have not exercised for a long period of time
13. Research shows that active participation in music contributes to people’s emotional,
physical and cognitive development. Several recent studies support the premise that
singing in particular improves mental and physical wellbeing by lifting the singer’s mood
and even improving the immune system.
14.This lecture looks at city planning. The process of planning a city involves controlling
the way land is used and the way the city environment is designed. City planners focus
on aspects of a city, such as transport networks and the development of communities.
15. A market anomaly is a price or a rate of return that contradicts the efficient market
theory. Market anomalies relate to structural factors, such as secretive business deals
and unfair competition, and they can also relate to calendar effects, such as the January
Effect, which is the upward trend in financial securities prices that usually occurs in
January.
16. Some industries are heavily reliant on the activities of volunteers to assist their paid
workforce. A volunteer has been defined as someone who willingly gives unpaid help in
the form of time, skills or services, through a club or organization. Roughly one-third of
people in Australia aged 18 years and over undertook voluntary work in the past year.
17. Students are encouraged to take part in an exchange program during their course.
Going on an exchange can provide them with international experience in their field and
valuable contacts for the future. This experience gives them an edge when they return
to the local market, and study abroad counts towards their degree back home.
19. While courses can change their structure and requirements year to year, students
should follow the rules and stipulations for the year in which they commenced their
course. Sometimes subject codes and names can change over time. If in doubt, the
course coordinator or dean will be able to clarify this.
20.There will be light showers overnight in the south, clearing in the early morning to
make way for a fine day. The north of the country can expect high winds before midday
tomorrow, but these should ease in the afternoon.
21. The word ‘biscuit’ refers to two distinct food products in American
English and British English. When Americans say ‘biscuit’, they are talking

you will be presented with a baked product that would be called a ‘cookie’ in
the States.
