Instructions for Immunology module

Read chapter 14 of Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology, 8th edition, Martini-Bartholomew.

Skip the following parts:

 § Lymphatic vessels (p504-505 + fig 14-2 and fig 14-3);


 § Antibody structure p 521 and fig 14-15;
 clinical notes on p511 and p527;
 p528-529.

Acquired Knowledge: Most important aspects of Immunology

Check whether you know the answer to the Learning Outcomes on p501 of your handbook (except 14-
9).

You should now have obtained a clear understanding of:

 Types of Immunity: Innate (non-specific) versus adaptive (specific) defense mechanisms; passive
versus active immunity; humoral versus cell-mediated immunity
 Major cells and components of the innate and adaptive immune system
 Major organs of the immune system and their function
 Different steps in an inflammatory response
 Different steps of T-cell activation & antigen presentation
 B-cells and antibodies: activation, differentiation to plasma cells, production of antibodies
 primary versus secondary responses
 principle of vaccination
 principle of allergies, autoimmunity, immunodeficiency, aging of the immune system

All checkpoints mentioned throughout chapter 14, except: 4, 8, 19, 23

Review questions p532-533, except: 2, 4, 12-14, 18-20, 23-26, 31-34

Q&A session! We will only focus on those which you did not fully understand.
