What is Big Data ?
• “Big Data” is data whose
scale, diversity, and
complexity require new
architecture, techniques,
algorithms, and analytics to
manage it and extract
value and hidden
knowledge from it.
Put simply, big data is larger, more
complex data sets, especially from new
data sources.

What is These data sets are so voluminous that

traditional data processing software just
Big Data ? can’t manage them.

But these massive volumes of data can be

used to address business problems you
wouldn’t have been able to tackle
before. (Source: Oracle)
Why Big Data ?

• Data driven decisions provide a

competitive advantage.

– Many studies have shown

that data driven decision are more
effective and more efficient than
human-generated decisions.

– Big Data allows organizations to

detect trends, and spot patterns
that can be used for future
benefit.
Why Big Data ?
Depends on what you do with it ?

How It is different than
traditional data ?
Characteristics of Big Data:
1-Scale (Volume)
• Data Volume
– 44x increase from 2009 2020
– From 0.8 zettabytes to 35zb
• Data volume is increasing exponentially

Exponential increase in
collected/generated data

14
Characteristics of Big Data:
2-Complexity (Varity)
• Various formats, types, and
structures
• Text, numerical, images, audio,
video, sequences, time series,
social media data, multi-dim arrays,
etc…
• Static data vs. streaming data
• A single application can be
generating/collecting many types
of data

To extract knowledge all these types of

data need to linked together 15
Characteristics of Big Data:
3-Speed (Velocity)
• Data is begin generated fast and need to be
processed fast
• Online Data Analytics
• Late decisions  missing opportunities
• Examples
– E-Promotions: Based on your current location, your purchase history,
what you like  send promotions right now for store next to you

– Healthcare monitoring: sensors monitoring your activities and body 

any abnormal measurements require immediate reaction

16
Characteristics of Big Data:
4-Uncertaity (Veracity)

the proportion of
uncertain data increases
as we look forward in
time.
Characteristics of Big Data:
5-Relevance (Value)
• When we talk about value,
we're referring to the worth
of the data being extracted.
Having endless amounts
of data is one thing, but
unless it can be turned
into value it is useless.
While there is a clear link
between data and insights,
this does not always mean
there is value in Big Data.

Big Data Analytics

• Big data analytics is the often complex process

of examining big data to uncover information
• such as hidden patterns, correlations, market
trends and customer preferences
• that can help organizations make informed
business decisions.
Why is big data analytics important?
• Organizations can use big data analytics systems
and software to make data-driven decisions that
can improve business-related outcomes.
• The benefits may include more effective
marketing, new revenue opportunities, customer
personalization and improved operational
efficiency.
• With an effective strategy, these benefits can
provide competitive advantages over rivals.
