ACTIVITY 1: RIZAL AND GOMBURZA

Read the following excerpt from a letter Jose Rizal wrote to Mariano Ponce. Answer the
questions that follow.

Without 1872 there would not be now either a Plaridel, or Jaena,

or Sanciangco, or would there exist brave and generous Filipino
colonies in Europe; without 1872 Rizal would be a Jesuit now
and instead of writing Noli Me Tangere, would have written the
opposite. At the sight of those injustices and cruelties, while still
a child, my imagination was awakened, and I swore to devote
myself to avenge one day so many victims, and with this idea in
my mind I have been studying and this can be read in all my
works and writings. God will someday give me an opportunity to
carry out my promise. Good! May they commit abuses, let there
be imprisonments, punishments, executions, good. Let Destiny be
fulfilled! The day they lay their hands on us, the day they
martyrize innocent families for our faults, goodbye, friar
government, and perhaps, goodbye Spanish government!

1. What is Rizal’s main message in this letter?

The main point of Jose Rizal's letter was that he was confident he would one day
exact revenge on the Spaniards who had taken advantage of Filipinos who had
suffered mistreatment and cruelties. In his writings, particularly his two novels,
Rizal describes a variety of wrongdoings committed by some Spaniards against
Filipinos and vows that those who commit wrongdoing will face a just
punishment, including imprisonment and execution.

2. List two things in the letter that support Rizal’s main message.
The two things that support Rizal's main message are revenge and justice.

I am able to express my nationalism in our community, especially during this pandemic,
by keeping effective lines of communication open with everyone. Communication
during a pandemic involves much more than just reaching out to individual people. An
"infodemic," or the spread of false information, is a modern phenomenon brought on by
the COVID-19 pandemic and the abundance of knowledge. The current situation The
COVID-19 virus must be stopped from spreading by providing people with the right
information.
