Disscussion text adalah jenis teks dalam bahasa Inggris yang menyajikan beberapa pendapat
yang saling bertentangan satu sama lain. Disscussion text berfungsi untuk memaparkan isu
yang problematik tanpa memihak pada salah satu pendapat atau pandangan saja.
Ciri-ciri
 Menggunakan Simple Present Tense
 Menggunakan Modal seperti may, can, must, dan lain sebagainya.
 Menggunakan Contrasting Conjunction atau kata penghubung yang membedakan seperti,
however, but, on the other hand, although, dan lain sebagainya.

Berikut adalah generic structure (stuktur umum) yang ada pada Disscussion text:

Berisi isu yang akan didiskusikan dalam teks.

Berisi pendapat yang medukung isu. Penulis dapat menyajikan ide pokok pada kalimat
pertama dalam paragraf lalu mengelaborasi ide pokok tersebut pada kalimat-kalimat
setelahnya.

Berisi poin yang bertentangan dengan ide pokok yang disampaikan sebelumnya. Sama seperti
pada poin pendukung, penulis dapat menyajikan ide pokok pada kalimat pertama dalam

The Effect of Social Media: Positive or Negative?
Not only in transportation, technology also becomes advanced in communication, and this
advancement is the cause of social media. Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook are some
examples of social media. Adolescents, or even some elementary students, also use one
or more social media. People think that social media has many positive effects for their life.
Yet, although social media gives positive effect, it also gives us negative effect.

The positive effect of social media is that it provides easy way to connect to friends and
relations. Social media allows us to stay in contact with friends and family who we are
unable to see in person because we cannot meet them everyday as for example, they live
far away from us. Social media also reduces communication barriers such as feeling shy to
talk in face-to-face communication. If we use social media, we can share our argument
without feeling shy to other people.

On the other hand, social media also has negative effect. Leading to addiction is the most
dangerous effect of social media.  When we feel really comfortable to use social media, it
will make us addicted. One survey in 2014 shows that 87.4% of 7,000 internet users in
Indonesian, like to access social media. Social media can decreases face-to-face
communication among us. Sometimes, it can make us think that we have a new world.
Spending most of the time using social media and forgetting that we have the ‘real’ world
are very dangerous effect of social media. Because of these uncontrolled behaviors, we
can forget our real family, friends, study, or even our job.

In conclusion, as the effect of the advancement of technology in communication, it is

common to use social media. However, we must aware of the effect of social media. Not
only gives positive effect, social media also gives us negative effect. It is okay to use social
media, but we need to control ourselves. We must use it very wisely.

media sosial. Remaja, atau bahkan beberapa siswa sekolah dasar, juga menggunakan satu
atau lebih media sosial. Orang-orang berpikir bahwa media sosial memiliki banyak efek positif
bagi kehidupan mereka. Namun, meskipun media sosial memberikan efek positif, itu juga
memberi kita efek negatif.

Efek positif dari media sosial adalah media sosial mempermudah cara kita untuk terhubung
dengan teman dan relasi. Media sosial memungkinkan kita untuk tetap berhubungan dengan
teman dan keluarga yang tidak dapat kami temui secara langsung karena kita tidak dapat
menemui mereka setiap hari misalnya dikarenakan mereka tinggal jauh dari kita. Media sosial
juga mengurangi hambatan komunikasi seperti merasa malu untuk berbicara jika berbicara
tatap muka. Jika kita menggunakan media sosial, kita dapat membagikan argumen kita tanpa
merasa malu kepada orang lain.

Di sisi lain, media sosial juga memiliki efek negatif. Menuju kecanduan adalah efek paling
berbahaya dari media sosial. Ketika kita merasa sangat nyaman menggunakan media sosial,
itu akan membuat kita ketagihan. Satu survei pada tahun 2014 menunjukkan bahwa 87,4%
dari 7.000 pengguna internet di Indonesia, suka mengakses media sosial. Media sosial dapat
mengurangi komunikasi tatap muka di antara kita. Terkadang, itu bisa membuat kita berpikir
bahwa kita memiliki dunia baru. Menghabiskan sebagian besar waktu menggunakan media
sosial dan lupa bahwa kita memiliki dunia ‘nyata’ adalah efek yang sangat berbahaya dari
media sosial. Karena perilaku yang tidak terkendali ini, kita dapat melupakan keluarga, teman,
studi, atau bahkan pekerjaan kita yang sebenarnya.

Kesimpulannya, sebagai efek dari kemajuan teknologi dalam komunikasi, sudah lazim
menggunakan media sosial. Namun, kita harus mewaspadai efek dari media sosial. Tidak
hanya memberi efek positif, media sosial juga memberi kita efek negatif. Boleh saja
menggunakan media sosial, tetapi kita perlu mengendalikan diri. Kita harus menggunakannya
dengan bijak.

Multi Level Company (MLM), which has been mushrooming in our country, still
becomes debates among those who agree with the system and those who disagree.
Here are some of the arguments.
On the other hand, there are people who believe that the strategy can improve
their income and way of life. By selling products, an MLMer will get an active income
that is 20% - 30% profit of the price of the products. If someone,let’s say Mr.Arnold can
prosper people by becoming his/her downline, but he will receive a percentage from
the goods the downlie buys. If the downline can also expand the network, Mr.Arnold
will also get percentages.
Being an MLMer, one can develop one’s personality and encourage oneself to
work harder. Since people are offer financial freedom by MLM, they will try to avoid
inconvidence and shyness in promoting their products. MLM companies also conduct
seminars and meetings to encourage people to work harder.
On the other hand, there are many MLMers fail to encourage people either to
become members or buy their products. This is because MLM is neither advertised
nor sold their products in general markets. Therefore, MLMers should spend more
time in persuading people to consider the quality of their products. This really needs
much spirit and not many people have this. There are also people who do not agree
that the company can improve people’s income. They say they see a cheesy, obvious,
and blatant appeal to greed and materialism.
The few anti membership arguments do not discourage people to become an
MLM. It depends on how people control and motivate themselves. Moreover, the
marketing strategy has been legalized by government and has been the most
expensive profession ever known.

Nowadays, the police have been applying the new regulation concerning the use
of seat belts. In European countries, this regulation has been applied for a long time.
However, this new regulation has become controversial and is an interesting topic to
discuss. Here are some of the arguments.
The use of seat belts has been proven to reduce the risk of injury or death in an
accident. Seat belt has become standard component in cars. The research shows that
most car accident will cause an injury to the head. Frequently, drivers or the
passengers driving without seat belts die because of this. By wearing the seat belts,
the injury will not happen since belts restrain our body on the car seat when the
accident happens.
Unfortunately, many cars, especially the old ones, don't have seat belts. This is
because the traffic conditions in the past were unlike the recent traffic conditions. The
designer of old cars didn't consider a seat belt as an important part. Besides, the
drivers wearing the seat belt will think that they are completely safe, so they may drive
carelessly. They are safe, indeed, but how about safety of other?
The seat belt is only one of the ways to reduce the risk of car accidents. It
doesn't mean that we are completely safe In short, our safety depends on ourselves.

There are differences of opinions on the Avian Flu. Some said this disease may
claim 150 million deaths but there are others who said current alarm on avian flu is
unwarranted as there is no proof of spreading between humans.
According to United Nation's chief coordinator on bird flu said 150 million or
more could die from the disease, if a pandemic strike. One of the frightening issues for
a human flu pandemic arising from avian influenza is its unpredictability.
It is difficult to estimate the death toll should H5N1 virus mutates into a form.
Which can be easily transmitted between human. It is not possible to predict whether
a pandemic would occur once or it would repeat. However, an epidemiologist
recommended that Government should take every possible precaution the threat of
bird flu, seriously.
Contrary to all dire talks about avian flu pandemic coming, an Ecologist
dismissed the current panic as unsubstantiated and guess work.
Ecologists commented that H5N 1 virus still remains a bird virus and has no
scientific evidences of human-to-human transmission. They said there are billions of
people across Asia which only 118 are reported being affected by avian flu. So, how do
they  calculate to show that 150 million or more deaths will come from avian flu. The
global panic, according to the Ecologist, is the result of “scare tactics" created by
politicians, medical officers, and the media.
It is premature to predict the outcome of avian flu. Health scientist could
confirm the possibility of human-to-human transmission. The advice is to keep calm
and stay alert because if you do, you will weaken your resistance and reduce your
immune system.

Everywhere you go nowadays, you see people using mobile phones. From school
children to the people, you see them talking in the supermarket, on trains, in the
street, everywhere!

So what are the advantages of mobile phones?

First of all, they are very convenient because you can phone from nearly everywhere.
Another advantage is that they are really useful in emergency situations. For example,
if you are alone in your car and it breaks down, you can get help quickly. In addition,
you can also use mobile to text your friends or connect to the net.

However, there are disadvantages such as the cost. Mobile phone calls cost more than
normal calls. Furthermore, it can be annoying if you are on the train or a bus, and you
have to listen to someone else’s boring conversation. It happens because people can
contact you anywhere, at any time, unless you switch your phone off!

In conclusion, there are both advantages and disadvantages. Personally, I feel mobile
phones are a good thing because they give us more freedom and make
communication easier.
