T ailoring is job that always requires self-directive activities and analysis

of logical procedure in making garments. Sewing essentials in tailoring are very

important to
produce well fitted garments. Patience and interest are also needed in sewing to save
time, money and effort.
Sportswear or sports garments are clothes designed for comfort casual wear.
Sport’s wear is usually made of durable, absorbent, and washable materials like silk,
cotton, nylon, and other was and wear fabrics which do not easily fade.
These are also made from lightweight materials. Spandex is the preferred
material for form – fitting sportswear like those used in wrestling, track and field,
dance, gymnastics, skating and swimming.

Typical sports garments include shorts, t-shirt and polo shirt. Specialized
garments include wet clothing (swimming, surfing, scuba diving),
ski wear (skiing), and leotards (gymnastics). This standardized sportswear
can also be used as a uniform in team sports, known by colors of the game.
In this lesson, you will learn how to sew athletic short pants.

What’s In

Tailoring is job that always requires self-directive activities and

analysisof logical procedure in making garments. Here are different
Styles ofathletic shorts.

Style of Athletic Shorts

• Baggies

These shorts had become popular as a football sportswear before

world war II. Baggies were used as the term during this period.

These are knee-length and loose-fitting shorts that became the

standard outfit for this sport activity from 1970 to 1990.

4|P a g e
5|TLE 10-Tailorin
g

• Bermuda shorts

These are shorts that extend to the knee commonly worn

with long socks with pockets and loops for belt.

• Boxer shorts

These are used as male underwear. This is related

to men’s shorts.

• Bun huggers

Volleyball players use these tight-fitting shorts

to allow enough movement. These are made
of spandex and/or nylon.

• Cycling shorts

These are skin tight shorts that are worn

by cyclist and have been used as casual street

wear. They are also worn under skirts and
dress by women.

• Dolphin shorts

An athletic style of shorts with a design of a

dolphin tail on the side seam in each leg’s lower
hem with a cord tied around the front waist.

5|P a g e
6|TLE 10-Tailorin
g

• Gym shorts

Gym shorts are worn in gymnastic class or for participation

in sports and worn by male or female athletes. Length varies from

above the knee or below the knee. Fabric such as cotton, spandex,

These polyester,or other synthetic fibers are used in making gym shorts.

shortshave a cord sewn and tied at the front waist.

• Running shorts

Running shorts are commonly

used for sports activities, worn

for maximum freedom movement,

and which reach up to the upper thigh.

Nylon is the most common material

used in making running shorts.

What’s New

Factors to consider in Planning for Athletic Shorts Production

Almost all people like to wear athletic shorts for any sport-related activity. They

usually display their own style of well-made athletic shorts for various age groups. Tailors or

designers make stylish designs to suit a person and make their sportswear saleable.

1. Type of sport activity

The type of clothes is designed specifically for the kind of sports being played.

2. Material

6|P a g e
7|TLE 10-Tailorin
g

Choose fabrics like cotton, mesh or nylon, synthetic, and polyester because this are suitable fabrics
for athletic shorts.

3. Design

One has the option to select a solid color or something with unique design. Others choose design with
pleasing effect on oneself.

Fabric Selection

The fabric should be strong and durable. In sewing athletic shorts, ensure that the fabrics are available
in your locality. Sometimes, fabrics can be recycled in sewing your running shorts.

Fabrics suitable for athletic shorts:

• Cotton- strong even when wet, and absorbent; used for sports and work clothes.

Examples: corduroy, denim, poplin, and seersucker

• Synthetic- smooth and slippery-treated (texturized or spun); contributes to the tendency of many
woven synthetics to unravel; highly resilient and wrinkle resistant

• Nylon- a synthetic fabric that is strong, low absorbent, and holds body heat; resist wrinkles and is
used in making athletic shorts; examples: satin and jersey

• Polyester- strong, low absorbent, resist wrinkles and stretching; holds in body heat and used for
sports wear

• Spandex- strong, non-absorbent fabric, and holds in body heat; lightweight with great elasticity
and is used for swimwear and ski pants

Body Measurements for Athletic Shorts

Accurate body measurements are essential for obtaining a good fit.

Hip

Equipment Required:

L-square
Tape measure
Pencil

The measurements for the lower garment are as follows:

Vertical Measurements Horizontal Measurement

Waist to hip level Waist Hip

Waist to crotch girth Thigh
Waist to knee girth
Waist to ankle Mid-thigh girth
Outseam / Outside leg length Knee girth
Inseam/ Inside leg length Ankle girth

The body measurements needed for making athletic shorts are the following:

• Hips- taken around the fullest part of the hips from the waistline
• Crotch or rise- taken from the waist to the lower part of the hips
• Waist- measured around the smallest part of the waist just above the hipbone
• Inseam- taken from the bottom part of the pant leg to the desired length of shorts
• Bottom or thigh circumference- taken around the bottom where the desired length of
pants fall
• Length- taken from the waistline down to the desired length of the shorts.

While measurements are being taken, be sure to wear well-fitted foundation garments. Measurements
should not be taken on loose-fitted garments which do not define the body lines. A lot
of practice is needed in order to take accurate body measurements and a variation of 0.5 cm may be
overlooked.

Square down from F to G

F-H=1½ cm to the right

Square up from H to I

E-J= ½ seat measurement to the right

J-K= ½ of the waist measurement on the tailor’s square or L-square

J-L= 1.9 cm to the right

Connect K to J. Make a slight curve to E

K-M= ½ of the waist measurement on the L-square

G-N= ¼ thigh measurement

N to E.

G-O= ¼ thigh measurement to the right

Connect M to O with a hip curve 1 ½ cm inward from C

M-P= measure 2 cm

Connect P to I with a curve line

Back Part

On the same pattern of the front pattern, do the following:

O-I= measure ½ cm to the right

N-2= measure 1 ¼ cm to the left

F-3= intersect line

3-4=measure 2 cm upward

4-5= ½ waist measurement on the tailor’s square

5-6= measure 5 cm to the left

Connect 6-7

L-7= ½ cm downward

E-8= apply ½ cm of the seat measurement on the L-square

Shape the crotch from 6, with a slight curve 1 ¼ cm from 8.

5-9 = midpoint of 5 and 6

Cutting line is a heavy solid line Cut along this line while
along the outer edge of a pattern. preparing the final pattern.

It is necessary to check the alterations needed in making the final pattern. To ensure a

well-fitted garment, block pattern should be checked first.

Take note of the following in drafted patterns:

• Waist of back pattern is higher and wider than the front pattern.
• Crotch of back pattern is deeper and wider than the front pattern.
• Length of back and front pants has the same measurements.
• Knee measurement has the same length.
• Bottom of back pants is wider than the front pants.

Your original shorts pattern

Making the Final pattern

1. Prepare the pattern paper, pencil, and drafting tools such as the L-square, French curve,

hip curve, and ruler.

2.Copy the basic pattern.

3.Make the necessary design of the pants specifically for the outer seam.

4. Provide the needed seam allowances:

a. Inseam =3/4 inch (1.9 cm)

b. Outseam =1 inch (2.54cm)
c .Waistline =1/2 inch (2.54 cm)
d. Crotch =3/4 inch (1.9 cm)

19 | T L E 1 0 - T a i l o r i n
g

e. Bias facing for the outer seam ½ inch(1.2cm)

f. Hemline =1/2inch (1.2cm)

5.Cut the final pattern with the seam allowances.

6. Indicate the pattern symbols on each piece.

7. Use suitable cutting tools.

8.Cut curve areas smoothly and slowly especially the crotch, armholes, and pockets.

9.For double patterns, prepare a ready pattern for the layout of the garment.

Cutting the Final Pattern (Athletic Gym Shorts)

Procedure
1. Selecting pattern layout

To find the correct pattern layout, look for the view that corresponds to your choice, then for
fabric that matches yours. Circle this view so you will not be confused with other views as you work.
Have a trial layout.

2.Interpreting cutting guides.

• Arrow

-Pattern piece extending beyond fold is cut from a single layer.

-After cutting other pieces, open the fabric right side up.

-Align the grainline arrow with the fabric fold.

• Dotted lines - - - - - - - - - -

These indicate pattern pieces to be cut a second time.

• Shaded pattern

This means that the pattern piece is placed on the printed side facing the fabric.

3. Folding fabrics for cutting

• Pin selvages (if you will use soft fabric).

• Lay the fabric right side up. Fold right sides together.
• Lengthwise fold -made on lengthwise grain with selvages along one edge;the most convenient
and easy -to-manage fold
• Partial lengthwise fold – made on lengthwise grain with one selvage placed on a
measured distance from the fold
• Double lengthwise fold -two folds both lengthwise with selvages meeting at the center

4. Pinning pattern to fabric from left to right and fold to selvages

• Pattern fold line is pinned first at the edge of the fabric. Insert pinsperpendicular
to the fold.
18 | P a g e
20 | T L E 1 0 - T a i l o r i n
g

• Graining arrow

This is pinned parallel to the selvage. Pin one end of the arrow first and measure from

the pin to the selvage. Pin arrows for all pattern pieces and pin all corners and edges to

save time and effort.

5. Cutting pointers

• Keep the fabric flat on the cutting surface.

• Bent handle shears help in keeping the fabric flat.

• Pinking shears should be used only for seam finishes, never to cut a garment; they do not
produce a precise edge.

• For firm cutting control, keep one hand on pattern, close to the cutting line.Keep body
positioned so that the cutting arm has free movement.
• For smooth edge, make firm slashes, sliding shears between strokes.

Let’s achieve it!

Activity 1:

What to use:

Pattern paper, ruler, pencil, L-square, tape measure

What to do:

Draft the basic pattern of your athletic shorts. Make a final pattern based on the style that

you want for your athletic shorts to be constructed. Submit your final pattern for evaluation.

Reflection

1. How will help the pattern in order to make fitted athletic shorts?
Patterns are used to cut the fabric pieces and the garment is made. Patterns are made
so that the same style can be duplicated when needed. You don’t have to start from
scratch each. It involves understanding machines, seam types and of course stitching of
the garment. A pattern is the template from which the parts of garment are trace onto
fabric before being cut out and assembled. And also patterns are usually madde of paper
or paperboard or cardboard if they need to be obust to withstand repeated use. This
pattern help you to make fitted athletic shorts by tracing the pattern onto fabric so that the
measurement can be correct and the style of your short will help you to visualize the fit
and design of an fitted atheltic shorts.

2.Why is it important to use the right tools when making athletic shorts?
It is important to use the right tools when making athletic shorts because for successful and professional looking sewing project, the right

Set of tools is essential. Without them, you’ll have have a hard time finishing you project with ease. Good quality tools are also

Important, especially for the sewing of athletic shorts. And also when you have the right tools, well fitted workout clothes that offer

Support in the areas, you’re going to feel more confident. The confidence translates into better performance.
