NCM 100:

THEORETICAL FOUNDATION OF NURSING

AY 2022-2023
ORIENTATION TO NCM 100 - TFN

How would I know the information about the NCM

100 course?

A course outline/course plan is provided for your

guideline. The basic information of the course,
description, learning contents, grading system,
references and consultation schedule are
indicated there. Please take time to read.
What am I supposed to know as an MCC
freshman?

An MCC student needs to be aware of the

school policies and guidelines. Students are
expected to attend the General Orientation
that is usually conducted at the start of the
semester.
What are the things that I have to know about the
BSN Curriculum?

The BSN curriculum offers General Education

Courses, Major Courses and Professional Courses.

Professional Nursing Courses are usually

prerequisite courses. This means a student has to
pass NCM 100 to be able to proceed to NCM 101,
102, & 103 in the succeeding semester.
What does NCM stands for?
NCM stands for Nursing Care Management.

In the BSN Curriculum, a nursing student has to

complete NCM 100 to NCM 122.

NCM 100 is Theoretical Foundation of Nursing, the first

nursing professional course that you have to complete
and pass this 1st sem in order to be able to proceed to
NCM 101, NCM 102 & NCM 103 during the second
semester. Aside from NCM 100, Ana & Physio and
Biochem are prerequisite subjects too.
What are the DO’s and DONT’s in my TFN class?
DO
1. Attend class regularly.
2. Read and understand the learning activities that will be
provided to you per meeting.
3. Follow directions carefully.
4. Work independently. Rely on your own ability. You will
have a better chance of learning and passing the
course if you do so.
5. Submit activity outputs/ Critical Thinking Exercises on
time. These are major sources of your grade.
DONT’s

1. Do not miss any learning activity. You will be marked

INCOMPLETE if you miss a learning activity.
2. Do not copy paste. Make sure to to answer in your
own words.
3. Do not cheat. Cheating of any kind is highly
discouraged. Academic honesty in online learning is
emphasized.
4. Please read and understand the Learner’s
Undertaking for flexible learning.
What is the Learner’s Undertaking for
Flexible Learning all about?

It is a learning agreement between the

teacher and the learner to ensure
academic honesty in flexible learning.
LEARNER’S UNDERTAKING FOR FLEXIBLE LEARNING DELIVERY
As an MCC student, I commit myself to:
1. Actively participate in the different alternative learning
activities through flexible learning delivery.
2. Work independently and rely on my ability to answer
all assessment tasks required for the course , except
for activities that require collaboration with other
students.
3. Practice academic honesty by keeping in confidence
all course requirements, refraining from copying
and/or sharing outputs with other students.
4. Be consciously aware not to copy paste or
plagiarize in answering assessment tasks and doing
requirements.
5. Safekeep my learning activities for personal use and
will not share passwords with other students.
6. Be responsible in initiating consultation with the
faculty for any concerns in the course.
7. Continue to uphold the MCC core values of being
competent, compassionate and disciplined.

I understand that violation of any of the above shall

subject me for disciplinary action.

Welcome to my TFN Class!
As a way of welcoming you, here’s my
introductory activity for you. Have fun!
NCM 100 - THEORETICAL
FOUNDATION OF NURSING
Activity No.1

Activity Title: Introduction to Theory

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of the activity, the learner is expected to:

1. Discuss the meaning of a theory.

2. Identify the concept, proposition, definition, assumption and

phenomena in the explanation of the Darwin’s Theory of
Evolution.

3. Apply critical thinking ability, comprehension ability and the

ability to follow directions.
DIRECTION:
1.Read and understand the introductory activity.

2.Reflect on the activity by answering the Critical Thinking

Exercise No.1 after reading the ppt presentation.

3.Respond to the questions in the LEARNER’S FEEDBACK via

Google Forms
OVERVIEW:
Nursing as a profession is involved in identifying its own unique
body of knowledge essential to nursing practice - nursing science.

Nurses must develop and recognize concepts and theories

specific to nursing in order to identify this knowledge base.

Theories in some disciplines were developed and used much

more before nursing theories.

It is therefore helpful to explore briefly how theory has been used

by other disciplines before considering theory in nursing.
Most undergraduate students are introduced to the
major theories in their disciplines:
Psychology majors study Freud, Jung, Sullivan, Piaget and
Skinner’s theories.

Sociology majors study Marx’s and Weber’s theories, and

Biology majors are introduced to Darwin’s Theory of Evolution.

*** NURSING STUDENTS are introduced to NURSING

THEORIES.
The extent to which theories build on or modify previous theories
varies with the discipline,as does the importance of theory in the
discipline.

Nursing is a practice discipline. In the practice discipline, the main

function of theory (and research) is to provide new possibilities
understanding discipline’s practice.

Before considering theory in nursing,it will be helpful to explore

briefly how theory has been used by other disciplines.
Among the four influential theories from the 20th
century were :
Marx’s Theory of Alienation

Freud’s Theory of the Unconscious

Darwin’s Theory of Evolution , and

Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.

INTRODUCTION TO THEORY
A THEORY is a SYSTEMATICALLY ORGANIZED system of accepted
knowledge consist of CONCEPTS, PROPOSITIONS, ASSUMPTIONS
and DEFINITIONS intended to VIEW or EXPLAIN a set of fact, event or
a PHENOMENA. ( Octaviano and Balita,2008)
DEFINITION OF TERMS:
The following terms are helpful in understanding a theory:

CONCEPTS- idea formulated by the mind.

PROPOSITIONS- explains the relationships of different concepts.

DEFINITIONS- various description which convey a general meaning.

ASSUMPTIONS- specifies the relationship of facts, concepts or phenomena

PHENOMENA- all natural events that the human senses can perceive.
Let us take as an example one of the most influential theories
from the 20th century that majority of students can relate with -
The Darwin’s Theory of Evolution.
WHAT IS THE DARWIN’S THEORY OF EVOLUTION?

Charles Robert Darwin is responsible for preparing and providing

scientific evidence that all species of life evolve over time from
common ancestors through a process called natural selection or
evolution.

Evolution is the process by which organisms change over time

as a result of changes in heritable physical or behavioral traits
[On the Origin of Species 1859]
Darwin’s general theory presumes that complex creatures
evolve from more simplistic ones naturally over a long
period of time due to random genetic mutations that occur
within the genetic code of an organism. These changes
are preserved and passed from one generation to
generation until the end result is completely different and
new organism evolves.

Darwin’s theory of evolution is the idea that all life is

related and descended from one common ancestor.
Humans did not evolve from monkeys. Humans are
closely related to modern apes than monkeys but we
didn’t evolve from apes either.

Humans share a common ancestor with modern

African apes like gorillas or chimpanzee which
scientists believed existed 5-8 million years ago.

Shortly thereafter, the species diverged into 2 separate

lineages. One of those lineages ultimately evolved into
gorillas and chimps and the other evolved into early
human ancestors called hominid.
After reading the ppt presentation, please proceed to the
LEARNER’S PARTICIPATION via Google Forms. Critical
thinking exercise No. 1 is prepared in order for you to be
able to reflect on the activity. Don’t forget to write down your
FEEDBACK.
