Food Tests – Required Practical

Testing for Sugars:

1.) Benedict’s Solution – Think of Benedict Cumberbatch

2.) Needs to be heated in a water bath

3.) Negative Result - Blue

4.) Positive Result Spectrum – with the highest being brick red

5.) Wear safety goggles and avoid contact with skin and eyes as it is an irritant

Testing for Starch:

1.) Iodine solution and it can just be added straight to the food

2.) Positive result – Blue/black colour

3.) Negative result – No colour change

4.) Wear safety goggles and avoid contact with skin and eyes as it is an irritant

Testing for Proteins:

1.) Biuret solution and can be added to a solution

2.) Positive result – Purple

3.) Negative result – Blue

Testing for Fats:

1.) Ethanol or Sudan 3

2.) Ethanol has a cloudy white emulsion for a positive result

3.) Sudan 3 has a red line that forms above the solution for a positive result

For more accurate results, every food should be crushed and add to water to create a solution
