1985 World Cup Online functions and MegaWiFi configuration 2/11

1. Configuration
1985 World Cup is the first game including MegaWiFi technology. This allows
connecting your MegaDrive/Genesis console to the Internet using your WiFi
router.
The online functions available in 1985 World Cup are:
• Online play against rivals in the PENALTIS mode.
• Online game updates.
• New game downloads (coming soon).
To enjoy these functions, you need an Internet connection and a compatible
WiFi router. You will also have to configure the cartridge WiFi connection as
shown in the “WiFi configuration” section.

1.1. WiFi configuration

To configure the WiFi connection, from the game main menu, select PENALTIES
and then WIFI CFG. This will start MegaWiFi Channel mode.

Select CONFIGURATION. The 3 available configuration slots will be shown. If one

or more are already configured, the default one will be highlighted.

To configure a slot or change the configuration of an already configured one,
select the desired slot. The NETWORK CONFIGURATION menu will be presented.

To configure the name of your router signal, you can enter it on the SSID field,
or alternatively you can use the scan function (SCAN...), that will allow you
choosing a signal among the ones detected near your console. Then you have
to input your network password on the PASS field.
Usually you do not need to change anything else. But if you want to set
manual IP configuration, you can do it by entering the ADVANCED... option, and
changing IP CONFIG from DHCP to MANUAL.

In the advanced network configuration, you can also change the WiFi standard
COMPATIBILITY parameters. By default, IEEE 802.11bgn mode will be used, but
you can restrict it to 802.11bg or 802.11b. Changing this is not recommended
unless you suffer router compatibility problems. Especially setting the 802.11b
option is discouraged since it can affect your network performance.
Once configuration is finished, in the NETWORK CONFIGURATION menu, store the
changes by selecting the SAVE! option.
When configuration is saved, you will be offered the option to make a test
connection. The configuration will be stored in the cart, so you will not need to
repeat the process, and the last saved configuration will be set as the default
one.
You can go back to the game from the MegaWiFi Channel main menu, by
selecting the 1985 World Cup option.
NOTE: MegaWiFi only supports the 2.4 GHz WiFi band. If your router does
not appear when using the network scan function, please make sure you have
the 2.4 GHz band enabled.

1.2. Gamertag configuration
The Gamertag represents how other players see you in an online match. Thus
it is recommended configuring it before starting playing online. You can do it
from MegaWiFi Channel main menu, by selecting GAMERTAGS option.
Three slots will be presented allowing to store up to three different
Gamertags. It is recommended selecting and configuring the first, because
currently it is the only one supported by 1985 World Cup. Once selected, you
will have to input the NICKNAME and TAG LINE. Then save the changes using the
SAVE! Option. There are additional fields you can configure (PASSWORD, TELEGRAM
BOT ID y TELEGRAM BOT AUTH), but currently no game is using them, so they can be
ignored by now.

2. Online penalties
To start an online penalties match, once your WiFi connection is configured,
you can select from the game main menu PENALTIES and then ONLINE. You will be
asked for a team, and then the game will connect to the server. If no player is
available, the game will keep waiting until one enters the match.

Once two players are matched, the vs screen will be shown, including the
nicknames of both players (as configured in the slot 0 of their gamertags).
Player 1 will be shown on the left of the screen, while player 2 will be shown
on the right. You will have to memorize which player you are (1 or 2) to
identify each round if you have to kick or catch the ball.

Once the penalties game ends, the winner will be announced. You can request
a REMATCH or EXIT the game.

If both players select REMATCH, another penalties game will start. Otherwise, the
game will end for both players.

3. Downloading and updating games
When game updates or new games are available, they will be published at the
MegaWiFi Channel. It is important to take into account that if you download a
game, it will replace the one previously installed. You will have to
download the previous title if you want to play it again.
To download a game, enter MegaWiFi Channel mode from PENALTIES / WIFI CFG. in
1985 WorldCup. Alternatively you can enter it by holding UP + START on
gamepad 1 while the console is powered on or restarted (using the RESET
button).
Once in MegaWiFi Channel mode, select CONNECT TO MEGAWIFI CHANNEL. You will be
asked for a WiFi configuration slot and a Gamertag. Then the console will
connect to the server.
When the connection is completed, a list of available games for download will
be shown. Select the one you wish and the game information page will be
shown. If you want to download it, use the DOWNLOAD! option to start the game
download process.
Under normal circumstances, the process takes about a minute for each 8
megabits to download. So a big game (32 megabits) can take about 4 or 5
minutes to download. During this time, do not power off the console. If the
download does not complete successfully (because of a power cut, a network
interruption, etc.) the game will not boot, and the MegaWiFi Channel mode will
be automatically started on next boot to allow you repeating the process.
When a download is successfully finished, the game will be kept in the cart
and booted automatically. You can turn the console off and play the game later
without having to download it again. Just turn on the console and the game
will start. If you want to go back to MegaWiFi Channel mode, you can do it by
holding UP + START in gamepad 1 while turning on the console or pressing
the RESET button.

4. Troubleshooting
4.1. I can’t connect to my router or the download is
very slow
Due to compatibility problems with some routers, there might be cases in
which it is not possible to connect or the download is very slow. In these cases
it is recommended trying the following:
1. Change the WiFi compatibility mode using the option COMPATIBILITY in
the advanced network configuration (CONFIGURATION / <CONFIG SLOT> /
ADVANCED... / COMPATIBILITY).
2. Try different combinations of options QoS, AMSDU and AMPDU in the
advanced configuration menu (CONFIGURATION / ADVANCED).
3. Go back to factory settings (CONFIGURATION / RESET TO DEFAULTS) and try
the configuration process again.
4. If the problem persists, your router might not be compatible. When
possible try connecting to a different WiFi router. Other options include
sharing the connection with a Raspberry Pi used as Access Point, or
sharing the connection using a smartphone or tablet (Android or iOS).

4.2. The game does not detect the WiFi module

If the game fails to start WiFi functions, it is possible that the communication
with the WiFi module is failing. To test if this is happening, start MegaWiFi
Channel mode by holding UP + START on gamepad 1, while you turn on or
reset the console. If the problem occurs, the MegaWiFi? text will be shown on
the lower right corner of the screen.
To fix the problem, extract the cartridge, make sure the cartridge and console
contacts are clean and dust free, and firmly insert the cartridge again.

4.3. The game does not boot

If this happens after a game download that has not been successfully
completed, start the MegaWiFi Channel mode by holding UP + START on
gamepad 1 while the console is powered on, and download the game again.
If the problem was not caused by an unfinished download, make sure the
game cartridge and console contacts are clean and dust free, and firmly insert
the cartridge in the console.

4.4. My router is not shown when I do a network
scan
MegaWiFi is only compatible with the 2.4 GHz WiFi band. If you try
connecting to an Access Point using a 5 GHz radio, or the additional bands of
the recent WiFi 6 standard (IEEE 802.11ax), the connection will not be
possible. Nowadays all WiFi routers have a 2.4 GHz radio, so make sure the
2.4 GHz radio in your router is enabled and try connecting only to this radio.

4.5. I have several WiFi slots configured, but 1985

World Cup does not connect to the server
Currently, 1985 World Cup does not allow selecting the slot to use for the
connection, and always uses the default one. If the default slot has an invalid
configuration, the connection will fail even if a valid configuration is available
on other slot. You can change the default slot by selecting the desired one, and
without changing any parameter, selecting the SAVE! option.

4.6. Default slot configuration works, but neither

1985 World Cup nor MegaWiFi Channel can connect
to server
The server might be down for maintenance or suffer any other technical issue.
Please try connecting again later.

4.7. 1985 World Cup does not use my Gamertag

Currently, 1985 World Cup only allows using the Gamertag on the first slot. So
please make sure you configure your Gamertag on the first slot to workaround
this problem.

4.8. I downloaded a game and I cannot play the one

I previously had anymore
The cartridge can only store a single game, so before downloading a title, the
one currently stored is erased. To be able to play the game previously stored,
you will have to download it again.
