CLEVELAND WINTER IMMERSION PROGRAM

What is the Cleveland Winter Immersion?

This course is a three-week urban residential experience in the Ohio City neighborhood of
Cleveland, where Miami University students will be involved in a range of activities to deepen
their awareness of the connection between your field of study and urban social justice. Miami
University students will live together in a group residence and will participate in activities which
include those listed below. Participants will also gain eligibility for a 8 Week Paid Summer
Internship in Cleveland.

What activities will I participate in?

➢ Meet and build relationships with community stakeholders, families, and youth through
internship experiences in urban agencies and schools.
➢ Participate in urban community activities, governmental meetings, etc.
➢ Learn about the history, culture, civic ecology and other forces shaping urban spaces, in
particular Cleveland and Ohio City.
➢ Focus on specific aspects of urban communities and the professionals who serve them,
considered through guest speakers, discussions, readings, activities and reflective
practices including journaling.
➢ Discuss and potentially contribute to community-based curriculum projects in process of
design and implementation by Cleveland teachers.

➢ Will I get credit hours for participating? No, this is a zero credit J-term immersion
experience.
➢ Is there an application fee? No, there is no application fee.
➢ Is there any financial assistance for any part (for example, meals) of this program? Yes,
if you need financial assistance, reach out to Dr. Tammy at schwarta@miamioh.edu
➢ Will lodging be provided? Yes, the Urban Cohort pays for lodging.
➢ Will transportation be provided? Yes, if you are in or near the Oxford area.
➢ What out of pocket expenses will I need to pay? You will need to pay for most of your
meals. There is a shared kitchen area where you can keep your food and prepare meals.
