Drainage Dimension

For the purpose of storm water designs analysis, 15 min duration rainfall data for
available data for a period of 1986 to 2009 (24 years) from India Meteorological Department,
Guwahati Regional Meteorological Centre is used. Rainfall intensity is ranging from 5 mm/hr
to 90 mm/hr and for the durations of 7.5 min to 180 min.
As it is difficult to collect short duration rainfall data, data is generated for short
durations like 1hr, 2hr, 3-hr, 6-hr and 12-hr rainfall values using an Indian Meteorological
Department (IMD) empirical reduction formula is used in the absence of observed data (t-hour
rainfall). Frequency analysis was carried out to establish Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF)
relationships, data and derived data by taking Imphal rainfall data which is available for 15 min
time interval. In the absence of data Gumbels extreme value method can be used as it gives
higher intensities for shorter durations which provide more factor of safety.

Drainage dimensions for different type of Roads

Road Type Design Discharge Width (m) Depth (m)
(lit./sec)
4L-DL 1900 1.2 1.0

SH/DL 1300 0.9 1.0

ODR/DL 1300 0.9 1.0
MDR/IDL 1300 0.9 1.0
MDR/SL 1300 0.9 1.0
IVR/SL 650 0.7 0.8
IVR/IDL 650 0.7 0.8

Time of concentration (tc) ranges from 7.5 to 20.0 minute.

Flow velocity is between 1.21 to 1.32 m/sec
Notes :

1. There are numbers of roads in different types where Drain Dimension of 0.4x0.4 m2 is
sufficient.
2. For a same type of road the drainage dimension can be different for different side of
the road depending on catchment area and existing drains.
