1.0 PROBLEM STATEMENT

In university life, there are many problems that we have to face especially water hygiene.
Student having difficulty because need to buy drinking water everyday. As a student, their need
to buy drinking water for themselves and not all student able to buy drinking water every day.
Then the problem we stated need to solve immediately. The authority of university have to
provide the facilily to the students.

2.0 SOLUTION

In order to overcome the problem stated in 1.0, the idea that has the possibility to meet the
solution is by placing a water filters in each block of every dormitory for student. This will make
easier for student to drink water without hesitation and they doesn’t need to buy drinking water
daily. The location of the water filters is important as it will affect the student convenience either
during the day or during the night. In addition, this can prevent money wasted. As a student,
money that they have is limited and need to be spend wisely. Furthermore, placing water filters
in each block can help student to save cost and prevent the student throwing mineral bottles
evenly in the dorms. Students also can save their time by simply take water from the water filter
instead by walk all the way just for buying drinking waters. With water filters placed at every
dormitory block, they only require to bring bottles. Student can also get hot or cold water during
midnight or any time.

In addition, we find that establishing a brand new water filter in each dorm requires a huge
capital including the installment. Therefore, we are thinking to request fund from department of
student welfare of the university or collecting funds through event conducted by students whom
may concerned.

3.0 DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCTS

There are two types of water filters that recommended for students which are:

1) Pitcher filters
2) Faucet filters

Pitcher filters

Pitcher style filter like Brita filters are economic units, which have made them quite popular. But
in the long run, it is actually one of the most expensive options. Filter catridges require regular
replacement-the cost per 40 gallons is RM 21-50 per or RM 290-RM690 per 750 gallons.

Almost all the pitcher style’s filters which is known use the GAC or ‘granulated activated
carbon’ as a medium for filtration. Typically,the GAC is a coconut shell which has been heated
to quite a high temperature in the absence of oxygen and then granulated. These filters remove
some chlorine ang hydrogen sulfides which have rotten egg odor but are not effective in VOC,
metal, pesticides or fluoride removal. In general, they are not very effective for water filters.

Faucet filters

The filters that are connected to kitchen faucet are similar to the pitcher filter but they are better
at filtration than the pitcher style filter. However, they have the same are cheap and need to
replace filters at every 100 liters at RM60-RM120 each or replace RM 420-RM580 for 700
gallons.

These filters are excellent in removing chlorine, byproducts of chlorine, volatile organic
compounds, fluoride, pesticides, particulates and also pharmaceuticals. These filters use filter
materials which are readily available.

Cuckoo water filter

All the water filter purifier from Cuckoo uses the latest filter technology, which doesn’t only
give you clean but also healthy water. Cuckoo also combines cost effectiveness with a utility
function and is very east to use and assemble. Product price ranging from RM2500-RM4999
rental contract for 5 years.

5.0 PRODUCT ANALYSIS

This analysis is to reseach about which water filters are most suitable for to place in each block
of every dormitory based on different perspective which is pricing of different type of brands and
the feature. Based on the survey water filters with lower price range is Aqua KENT which is
between RM500 – RM 2000. Cuckoo with highest price convection which is between RM2500 –
RM 4999.

Based at the survey that we have done, students need something that easy to use and affordable.
Aqua KENT is the most suitable price range to place at each block of every dormitory.
Futhermore the rental of the contract only 2.5 years. Therefore, Coway and Cuckoo is not
suitable because the price is too expensive for students based on this point of view.

6.0 CONCLUSION

In conclusion it is clear that by placing the water filters in each dormintary for student will
brought benefit and also negative actions such as throwing away the bottles. This also can save
their money as they do not have to spend to buy drinking water daily. This also could save time
for student who stay far away from café.

In the nutshell, by placing a water filters in each block of dormitory for student is agreed by most
UUM student. There are 3 brand that are effectiveness and higher technology in the market
which is Aqua KENT, Coway and Cuckoo brands. After survey have been done, we suggest that
Aqua KENT is the most suitable to place at every block of each dormitory because the price are
cheaper as compare to other brands.
