DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT AND PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT

WHAT IS DIAGNOSTIC?
 Concerned with the diagnosis of illness or other problems.
*To determine the problem or condition of a person.
*When you go to a doctor your doctor will diagnose your illness or your problem. Same with
teacher and students, teacher will diagnose the students to determine the problem of the students.
WHAT IS ASSESSMENT?
 Assessment in education refers to the wide variety of methods or tools that educators use
to evaluate, measure and document the academic readiness of student.
*It help teachers and school to measure the learning of students, they use many tools to collect
data based on the result of assessment. Example they used pretest and posttest.

Diagnostic Assessment
 Is a type of assessment which examines what a student knows and can do prior to a
learning being implemented.

 Type of assessment given before instruction. It aims to identify the strength and
weakness of the students regarding the topic to be discussed.

*Examine need to determine the weakness of your students, meaning you need to understand the
preliminary learning of a students and prerequisite knowledge about the subject that we are going
to teach. Which the students didn’t catch up during the last school year.
For Example: you are an English teacher and your subject is construct sentences the prerequisite
knowledge in your subject are parts of speech its verb, noun, adjective etc. also verbal
agreement. Your students should identify what is noun, verb and more part of speech if they
can’t determine, this will be the weakness of your students. As a teacher it is important to us that
your students understand your topic or lesson. mahalaga na naiintindihan nila yung itinuturo mo
dahil kahit anong galing ng isang teacher kung hindi naman buo yung prerequisite knowledge sa
students mo hindi nila maiintindihan yung lessons mo. So you have to do reteach the prerequisite
of your subject that they don’t catch up during the last school year. So you should diagnose your
students. At kung naipaliwanag mo na sa kanila That’s the point that you can say your students
are ready to learn with your lesson. hindi naman lahat ng lesson nila babalikan mo yung point lng
na talagang kailangan sa subject mo at lumabas sa results ng diagnostic test nila.
Aside weakness you should also identify the strengths why? Baka naman your lesson is difficult
for you but for them is easy because they already have advanced learning. Therefore if you are
not aware of your student strength there is a possibility the time and effort you spent ay
masasayang, na sana nailaan mo pa sa mas prior na matutunan nila. So that’s the purpose of
knowing strengths of a students.
“So when we do this the diagnostic assessment, yung pag identify ng weakness, strengths and
preparation ng isang students?

Before instruction- or in beginning, why because the results of diagnostic test or

diagnostic assessment is important it will guide teachers to do effective lesson plan
and understand what is a prior learning being implemented.
“Diagnostic test result is recorded but not graded”
*Meaning you need to be creative when you make diagnostic test.
*The question is why? Because some of your students think diagnostic test not graded so they
won't take it seriously, that's why we have to be creative to get accurate result. Aside dun
reference din ito ng teachers.

Placement Assessment
 This assessment are used to ‘place’ students into a course, course level or academic
program.
 Is concerned with entry performance of student, the purpose of placement evaluation is
to determine the prerequisite skills, degree of mastery of the course objectives and the
best mode of learning.
*From the word of placement “place” they select all qualified students on the particular level
course or program. Ang school at teacher natin ang nang iimplement ng assessment na ito.
Our school will consider students qualified through placement test results. They are based on
result, if the students pass the qualification exam will be place in appropriate learning or
program. Dahil din sa results ng exam they can identify kung sino ang ready na at hindi pa
para sa next level or higher level. It is also especial type of assessment because it not usual
see in the classroom it happen during take in a bigger future. Kaya nga placement.
For example: The battery exam for education and accounting students they need to pass the
exam for qualification for 3th year level and the educators assume na ready na sila at kaya
nila maka survive sa program nila. And for those students didn’t pass the exam they required
to shift in other program. That’s the placement assessment.
