LESSON PREVIEW:

Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer. Computer Hardware is any part of the
computer that we can touch these parts. These are the primary electronic devices used to build up the
computer. Examples of hardware in a computer are the Processor, Memory Devices, Monitor, Printer,
Keyboard, Mouse, and the Central Processing Unit. Software is a collection of instructions, procedures,
documentation that performs different tasks on a computer system. We can say also Computer Software
is a programming code executed on a computer processor. The code can be machine-level code or the
code written for an operating system. Examples of software are Ms Word, Excel, Power Point, Google
Chrome, Photoshop, MySQL etc.

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING

1. D- Operating System tells the computer how to perform the functions of loading storing and executing
an application= program and how to transfer data.

2. B- is a form of user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices through graphical
icons and audio indicator such as primary notation, instead of text-based user interfaces, typed
command labels or text navigation.

3. C- Electronic spreadsheet programs allow you to organize data, perform calculations, make decisions,
and present your data in a table or graph. When Excel starts it opens a document window called a
workbook.

4. D- A word processor is a device or computer program that provides for input, editing, formatting, and
output of text, often with some additional features.

5. C- Windows 1.0x (released in 1985). In this year Microsoft finally caught up with the whole graphical
user interface craze and released Windows 1.0, its first GUI based operating system (although no one
would dare to refer to it as one.

6. A- Multitasking refers to the ability of an operating system to have more than one program (also
called a task) open at one time.

7. B- A thread of execution is the smallest sequence of programmed instructions that can be managed
independently by a scheduler, which is typically a part of the operating system.

8. C- A fiel management is an important task that the operating system which keeps track of the files
stored on a computer so that they can be retrieved when needed.

9. D- Information Systems is an academic study of systems with a specific reference to information and
the complementary networks of computer hardware and software that people and organizations use to
collect, filter, process, create and also distribute data.

10. A- Graphic user interface shown in the accompanying figure, icons, buttons, menus, and other
objects are selected with the mouse to issue commands to the PC.
