Questions.

1. When students arrive at class each day, they spend too much time chatting, playing
with their cellphones, or teasing their classmates. What is one strategy you might use to
get them on task immediately? Explain why you think it is the most effective strategy.

2. Over the past couple of weeks, you have had to send Gaby to the classroom time-out
seat three times because of her disruptive behavior. But the behavior has continued.
What are some ways in which you might deal with this situation?

3. You have to teach a Speaking class to 7 graders online during covid 19 pandemic.
You know that their pronunciation really needs exercising. Plan a 45 minute Zoom
meeting which you believe the students will learn a lot of pronunciation practice. Show
the minute-to-minute activity.

Answers.

1. I think the most effective strategy is to change their seating position because most
students who are busy playing cellphones and chatting with friends are students who
sit in the back seat. They feel invisible to the teacher at the front and can freely do
whatever they want. Therefore, by rearranging their seats to keep eye contact and
engage with the teacher will minimize these distractions and will achieve useful
learning.

2. Firstly, I will approach her to find out in advance what causes Gaby to behave like
that because there must be something wrong in the learning process in my class.
Either the fault lies with Gaby personally or in the way I teach that may not interest
her. Secondly, I will offer her an interserting and engaging lesson. It is because I
believe a student who enjoys what she/he is doing much less likely to be disruptive,
and I hope so does her. Then, thirdly, I will ask her to write a pledge and promises
personally with me to reinforce her responsibility for the classroom, respect for
herself and others, and an overall culture of learning.
3. - In the first 5 minutes, I will let them know the feature “Breakout Room” in Zoom
that we will use in the course.
- In the second 10 minutes, I will spend time interacting with individual learners,
answering their questions, and helping them understand what will be expected of
them in the course, so it will keep them from making inaccurate assumptions about
the course.
- Then in the next 10 minutes, I will teach how to pronounce the word correctly and
ask them to imitate it. I will also add some examples of conversations with the correct
pronunciation.
- In the next 15 minutes, I will have breakout rooms in which they will move to
different virtual rooms where they can discuss in smaller groups for small group
discussions. I will ask them to discuss with each other, practice how each student
pronounces the word, and correct each other. At this time, I will also continue to
continue by entering the room one by one to pull up all of the responses from an
individual learner in a discussion and evaluate the quality of responses and
interactions with other learners.
- Finally, in the last 5 minutes I will give them a chance to give their opinion about the
lesson to find out whether useful learning has been achieved.
