Learner’s Tasks

Lesson Overview

Being a 21st century learner means acquiring the essential knowledge, skills, and the
right attitude to navigate the world. One of the most important skills that will enable
you to achieve this is your skill in doing research.

In this lesson, you will compile and synthesize what you have learned in the preceding
lessons by writing a research report.

Here are some of the important facts about research report:

Research Report

• a systematic inquiry that investigates hypotheses, suggests new interpretations

of data or texts, and poses new questions for future research to explore.
• a completed study that reports an investigation of a problem, identifies
questions to be addressed, and includes data collected, analyzed, and
interpreted by the researcher.

Parts of a Research Report

• Introduction
o Brief Background: it provides an overview of the scope of the research.
o Objectives of the Study: it states what the researcher wants to find out
in the study by giving the objectives or raising research questions that
are to be addressed in the study.
o Significance of the study: it states the relevance of the study to the
intended audience and what are the specific benefits they can get
from the findings of the study.

1
o Literature Review: Discuss previous studies done on the chosen topic
and relate your study to them.
• Body
o contains substantial amount of information that needs to be clearly
and accurately presented and analyzed.
o presents data through the use of pie charts, graphs, or tables. The data
presented are meant to address the research questions or objectives.
o uses related studies to support or refute the findings.
o cites sources used in the study.
o introduces and explains the direct quotation, paraphrase, or summary
incorporated in the discussions.
• Conclusion
o brings home the highlights of the research paper.
o allows readers to take a new perspective about the thesis.
o provides the readers with recommendations that can be explored
concerning the topic.

TABLE 1: Research Report Sections and their Contents

Writing a Research Report

Section Content
1. Cover page • Student name and assignment
details.
2. Table of contents • List of main sections and sub-
sections, with page numbers,
including tables, illustrations,
reference list, and appendices.
3. Abstract • A one-paragraph overview of
aims methods, results, and
conclusions. This can only be
written after the study is
conducted.
4. Introduction • Research aims and objectives,
including any hypothesis.
Rationale for the study,
specifically why the issues for
investigation are important or
significant.
• Might define technical terms
mentioned in the study.
• Outlines scope of the report.
• Briefly states how report is
organized.
5. Background of the study: • Survey of key literature: summary
Literature Review of major themes, concepts
How your study fits in and/or trends. Situates current
research study in relation to
existing literature, example, how
it will add to current knowledge,
or address existing gap.

2
6. Research Methodologies: • Give precise details of methods
How the study was carried out; how and procedures, e.g., study's
data was analyzed participants, and how they were
chosen;
• data collection methods (e.g.
surveys, interviews,
questionnaires, personal
observation, case study);
• process of ethical consent if
applicable.
• data analysis methods.
7. Results • Presents results objectively,
without discussion.
• Can include explanatory or
supporting data (e.g., extracts
from interviews). Include
illustrations, figures, or tables.
8. Discussion • Evaluation and discussion of
(*Results and Discussion can be results.
combined) • Comments on significant
findings, and implications.
Might also include:
✓ whether any initial hypothesis
was supported;
✓ whether or not the findings met
the aims of the study;
✓ a comparison of your findings
with other research;
✓ limitations, flaws or problems in
study design or methods.
9. Conclusion • Clear and concise conclusion to
study.
• Briefly restatement of how well
the study design met the study's
aims.
• Emphasizes major findings and
implications of findings as
addressed in discussion section.
• Brief recap any faults or
limitations covered in full in the
discussion section.
• If applicable, suggest future
research directions.
10. Recommendations • Summarizes and lists the order of
(if applicable) importance.
11. References • Alphabetical list of references.
Start on new page, attach to end
of report, before appendices.
12. Appendices • Relevant and necessary material
not included elsewhere, e.g.,
copy of questionnaires or survey

forms; participant consent form;
large tables referred to but not
included in the body of report;
raw data. Start each appendix
on a new page.

How to Select and Limit a Research Topic

1. Brainstorm for Ideas

Example:
– What local treasure or heritage in the community would you like to research
on? Why does it interest you and what you would like to know more about it?
Do you have an opinion about the local treasure or heritage?

2. Identify the Sources of General Background Information

Example:
– What sources of information can you use to gather information? Who can
help you in providing information about the topic? Can you use the library,
magazines, journals, periodicals, or the internet to collect information? Do you
know any organization that can help you in gathering information?

3. Focus on Your Topic

Example:
– What specific area or factor of the local treasure of heritage in the
community would you focus your research on? Why did you decide to focus
on that specific area or aspect? Who is affected by the topic?

4. Make a List of Useful Keywords

Example:
– What are the keywords that you can use to best describe your topic?

5. Be Flexible
Example:
– What are the considerations or judgements that you would do if ever there is
a need to modify your research topic?

6. Define Your Topic as a Focused Research Question

Example:
– What is the primary question that your research topic wants to answer?

7. Formulate a Thesis Statement

Example:
– What is the thesis statement of the study that you would like to conduct?

4
Activity 1A: Modified True or False
Directions: Read each statement below carefully. Write T if the statement is true and
if it is false, change the underlined word with the correct answer. Write your answer
on your answer sheet.

1. The Research Methodologies give precise details of methods and procedures of a

research report.

2. It is in the Discussion Section where the list of main sections and sub-sections, with
page numbers, including tables, illustrations, reference list, and appendices are
written.

3. The Background of the Study is where the survey of key literature, summary of major
themes, concepts and/or trends are found.

4. The Results section presents results objectively, without discussion. This can include
explanatory or supporting data (e.g., extracts from interviews) including illustrations,
figures, or tables.

5. An introduction is a one-paragraph overview of the aims, methods, results, and

conclusions of a research report.

Activity IB: What’s In It

Directions: Explain the following based on your understanding on How to Select and
Limit a Research Topic. Write your answer on your paper following the given format
below.

Brainstorm for Ideas

Identify the Sources of General Background Information

Focus on your Topic

Make a list of Useful Keywords

Define your Topic as a Focused Research Question

5
Formulate a Thesis Statement

Activity 2A: Think, Ask and Solve

1. Think of academic or behavioral problems that students are facing in their studies
because of the pandemic. The problem that you would choose would serve as your
thesis title.

2. After you have chosen specific problem, write three questions that would guide
you in solving and determining the factors of your chosen title. Write your output on
your answer sheet.

Here is a sample for your guidance.

6
Activity 2B: Up for Outlining
Directions: Based on the thesis statement and questions you have stated in the
activity above, and the notes you have gathered, you can now write the outline of
your research report. Use the guide below in writing the outline.

I. Introduction

A. Background Information

B. Objectives of the Study

C. Significance of the Study

D. Related Literature

II. Body

III. Conclusion

Activity 3: Research Writing on the Go

Directions: Write a research report that tackles relevant social issue. Follow the guide
in writing research report in Table 1 (Research Report Sections and their Contents)
found in the lesson overview. Please use the same title you have made in Activity 2A.
