8 Reasons Why We Study Literature
1.
Literature provides you
Wisdom and Insights.
Wisdom (your ability to make sensible decisions and
judgments based on personal knowledge and experience)

What was the best decision you think you made so far?
What made it best for you? (No. 9 in your worksheet)
2.
Literature makes you
explore rules
in human nature between
the Logic of EVIL & the Heart of GOODNESS.
• What do you know
about Human Nature?

By nature, I think people

are basically …
3.
Literature makes
you reflect and,
reconsider your
reading
experiences as
parallel to reality.
Think of a movie that interest you.

How close is it to reality or what realities in life are

presented in that movie?
4.
Literature makes
you understand
how the world
is actually
understood by
others.
Why do you think the concept of time is different from how
Filipinos view it compared to other countries?
5.
Literature makes you flexible and adaptable
to the cultures across the Philippines
and the around the world.
CONTINENT COUNTRIES
Asia Japan, Thailand, India, Singapore
Europe England, France, Italy, Greece, Switzerland
North America Canada, United States, Mexico
South America Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina
Africa South Africa, Nigeria, Botswana
Choose 2 continents and 1 country for each continent;
Complete the statement below.
In (continent 1), I would like to have a short time visit to (country 1)
and find out about its culture and in (continent 2), I would like to spend
more time in (country 2) to experience its culture.
6.
Literature improves
your use of language.
So far , what is your favorite English word? Why?
7. Literature develops your
capacity to sympathize
and empathize.
Tell about a time
when you expressed
sympathy &
empathy
with someone.
8.
Literature makes
you identify and
address issues
that are personal,
social and global.
What do you know about the Aetas or the Dumagats or any
indigenous tribe in the Philippines and what seems to be their
problem?
Final Activity for this Introductory Lesson

Think of stories you’ve read OR movies

you’ve watched OR songs you’ve listened to.
Choose only one among the reasons why we
study literature.
Connect that reason to the stories OR
movies OR songs.
Make a statement and type it on your
worksheet.

-see sample in the next slide-

The story of the “The Maze Runner” by James
Dashner makes me realize how the characters were
able to beat creatures and finally went out of the
maze. This is like a symbolical reflection of problems
we experience in real life (reason 3). It only
takes courage and will power to face the
challenges we meet everyday.

--see next slide for more sample-

As I was listening to “No Tears Left To Cry“ by
Ariana Grande, I feel that I can relate to the song
(reason 7). There’s something in the song that
makes me want to move on after my girlfriend broke
up with me. Although the song may also suggest
that somehow relationship could still go on, I still
consider the possibility of giving another chance for
our relationship to heal and become better in time.

- one last sample in th next slide -

After watching “Alita, Battle Angel”, I realize a personal
issue (reason 8). In the movie, Alita keeps on
remembering and wanting to be who she really is or
what she really is. For myself, I sometimes think of
who really I am or what I really want. The movie
teaches me to just explore life and think about my
strength and capabilities. If I want to discover who
really I am, I just need to upgrade myself and my
talent/skills so I can be what myself need to be.
