Assignment 1 – Student Choice Project 2 (SCP 2) Design Proposal

For this assignment, you are beginning your first large student-choice project in this class. To do
this, you will need to develop an idea, who (if anyone) you want to work with, and create a
proposal for it. If you would like inspiration or want to join a class-wide project make sure you
are paying attention in class or come speak to me.

Assignment Details
● Formative 50 pts
● due 10/21 EOD
● Use the template or create your own. Don’t just type into CTLS.
● If you want to do something outside of the realm of microcontrollers that is ok. If you
want to do something that is like a technical learning skill (such as welding or learning to
use the lathe) that is fine as well. Regardless, complete all parts of this assignment.
● How to submit: Complete the template below and have either you or someone in your
group turn this into CTLS. Most of the template can be completed as a group, but the
specific goal/objective for yourself and possibly the sketch will need to be specific to you.

Rubric For Student Choice Project 2 (SCP 2) Design Proposal

Criteria Max Score Your Score

Proposal identifies the objective of the project for the 10

overall project as well as themselves individually,
including constraints and criteria.

Proposal gives a reasonable estimate for the materials 10

needed (this does not need to be exhaustive but
should demonstrate some degree of thought &
planning)

Proposal gives a reasonable estimate for when the 10

project will be completed, what will be accomplished
by 2/18, and how the project can be scaled down.

includes at least one sketch or drawing of the 10

proposed project specific to the individual student’s
objective.

Overall thoroughness and neatness to the proposal. 10

Overall Objective
-Clearly write what the overall goal/objective is. Define explicitly its constraints and criteria.
To create an altitude sensor using microcontrollers that senses the highest altitude a plane can
reach. We will use a micro:bit, makecode block code, Fusion360, and 3d printing. We will use a
micro:bit and peripheral devices to create the altitude sensor, and will design parts of an airplane in
Fusion360 and 3d print out the parts to assemble. The constraints are that we might not have the
peripheral device we need, and we might not have enough time to build the airplane and code the
altitude sensor. The materials from 3d printing might be too heavy for the size of the airplane, so
we will have to print it out in multiple parts or just cut and use foam. The criteria of this project is
that we must make a project which may or may include the use of microcontrollers and may or may
not use new technical skills we will learn like welding.

Your specific goal/objective

-Clearly write what your goal/objective is and how it fits into the larger project. This should be unique
to you. Define explicitly its constraints and criteria. If you are doing an individual project you do not
need to do this section.

Simona: My individual goal for this project is to focus on finding a way to detect the maximum
altitude so that this project could potentially be used in a practical way. The constraints for this are
time and limited resources. My goal is to finish in under two weeks, but obstacles along the way
such as limited resources may prevent that. Another constraint is the height, it should not be more
than 6 inches. The criteria for this goal is that I construct parts of an airplane using fusion360 and 3d
printing while later assembling the parts together to make a flying airplane. Otherwise there will be
no altitude to sense. Another criteria is that the project should use foam material so that we can
produce a more efficient plane.

Dhriti Naik: My goal is to mainly focus on constructing the airplane within 1-1 ½ weeks. I will start
by looking at model airplanes and studying the wing shapes and positions of the wings and center
of mass. I will then find areas where I can split the airplane to later reconstruct it after 3d printing.
The main constraint is to finish this by the time limit I have set for myself, and also to make the
wings and body thin to have more surface area in order to increase the size and decrease the
concentrated weight. Another constraint is that each piece must be less than 6 inches tall. The
criteria is that the airplane must fly in order for the whole project to come together, because if the
airplane does not fly, the altitude sensor cannot be tested. By completing this airplane, the altitude
sensor can be tested, and the project will be halfway complete.

Who is involved?
Dhriti Naik and Simona Eyob

What resources will your team need?

-Is there additional knowledge you will need? May need assistance from the teacher on whether
required materials are available.
-What materials will you need for this project? Foam, microbit, altitude sensor (peripheral device),
battery, and tape.
-Are there any special tools you will need? 3d printer, exacto knives, sand paper, desktop for
fusion360 , hot glue gun and hot glue sticks, and foam (how many sheets will depend on how big
each sheet is).

Timeline/Goal
-How long do you anticipate this project taking? Most likely 2-2 ½ weeks. Our estimate is around
November 4, 2022.
-How will you know when you are done? When the highest altitude of a plane can be sensed and
made clear to the user.
-If you are unable to accomplish the entirety of your project, how can you scale it down? The
microcontroller (altitude sensor) will be removed from the project to only build an airplane using
Fusion360.
-What do you expect to have accomplished before the break i.e. by 9/9?
We expect to have the entire project complete before Thanksgiving Break.

Don’t forget to include some accompanying sketch or drawing of your proposed project that is specific
to your individual objective!
