Gump, is a movie about a guy with a variety of disabilities; Gump, despite his deficits, overcomes them and perseveres through life. To be honest, the movie itself is a cliché— a classic movie about overcoming adversity through perseverance. But viewed through the lens of the portrayal of people with disabilities, the movie is spot on. For instance, how his mother was able to push the educational board to admit his son despite the lack of resources led to the educational integration of disabled children, which mirrors the idea of mainstreaming or inclusion. Furthermore, the film emphasizes the idea that we never know what we are truly capable of—not just for people with disabilities, but for everyone; Gump walks with a limp, wears leg braces, and has a low IQ, but he manages to become a professional athlete and achieves RUN, FORREST, RUN! more than most of us.
