Resource-Writing Lesson Plan

Objective: Students will be able to listen to a passage and use the passage to write a
short written response about the author’s purpose. Students will be able to use the
passage to write evidence and give reasons to prove the evidence.

Essential Questions: How can I use this skill in my other classes?

Today we are working on:

● Short Answer Written Response for Day of the Dead: From Aztec Goddess Worship to
Modern Mexican Celebration
● Students will have the story read aloud to them prior to writing the short written
response.
● After the story is read aloud, students will use the template provided to write their written
response with the help of the teacher.

IEP Goals:

1. when given a writing prompt, student will draft a topic sentence with 1-2 supporting
details that is grammatically correct
2. Student will increase his ability to write sentences that express ideas achieving a criteria
80%

Misconceptions:

● Students may not understand the concept of the syntax of writing.

○ Students will use anchor charts made by the class to help show their
understanding of the 4 types of sentence structures

Differentiation:

● Enrichment: For students needing a greater challenge, encourage details and a

longer length (at least 4–5 sentences).
Have students illustrate their completed stories on a sheet of blank paper.
● Support: While others work independently, call your struggling writers into a
group to work with you.

Assessment:

● Check student understanding by asking students comprehension questions about Day of

the Dead. What do they know about the celebration and do they celebrate the holiday
with their family?
